The 2026 Buick Encore GX has taken the top position on a newly published ranking of the most reliable luxury SUVs, outperforming several larger and considerably more expensive competitors.
The ranking was produced by automotive publication TopSpeed using quality and reliability scores published by J.D. Power. The Encore GX led the list with a score of 90 out of 100, placing it in J.D. Power’s “Great” rating category.
That result is notable because the Encore GX occupies an unusual position in the market. It is priced and sized more like a mainstream subcompact crossover, but Buick markets it as a more refined and premium alternative to models such as the Chevrolet Trailblazer, Honda HR-V and Nissan Kicks.
The ranking does not prove that every Encore GX will be problem-free or last longer than every competing SUV. It does, however, suggest that verified owners have reported relatively few defects, malfunctions and design problems compared with many other vehicles assessed through the same scoring system.
What the 90-Point Reliability Score Measures
J.D. Power gives the 2026 Buick Encore GX an overall consumer rating of 85 out of 100. Within that broader assessment, it receives a quality and reliability score of 90 out of 100.
The reliability category measures problems reported by vehicle owners across the entire vehicle. It covers the engine, transmission, electronics, infotainment system, interior features and other mechanical or design-related areas.
A higher score means owners have reported fewer defects, malfunctions and design flaws. The score is based on feedback from verified vehicle owners rather than only laboratory testing or predictions made by automotive editors.
This is different from J.D. Power’s overall vehicle ranking, which also considers driving experience, resale value and dealership satisfaction. The Encore GX’s individual category scores include 82 for driving experience, 77 for resale and 87 for dealership experience.
Its strong reliability score therefore does not mean it leads every measurement. It means reliability is one of the vehicle’s strongest areas according to the owner data used for the rating.
The Encore GX Did Not Rank First in Every SUV Comparison
The claim that the Encore GX topped a reliability list requires some context.
TopSpeed placed the model first in its ranking of reliable luxury SUVs because of its 90-point quality and reliability score. However, J.D. Power’s broader “Best Small SUV of 2026” ranking uses the complete consumer score rather than only reliability.
In that wider small-SUV comparison, the Chevrolet Trailblazer and Subaru Crosstrek each scored 86 overall. The Ford Bronco Sport and Buick Encore GX followed with scores of 85.
This means the Buick led one publication’s reliability-focused list, but it was not named the undisputed best SUV across every category or rating organization.
Reliability rankings often produce different results because each organization uses its own data, definitions and weighting system. Some rely on verified owner reports, while others use subscriber surveys, warranty claims, road testing or predicted reliability based on previous model years.
Consumers should therefore treat the number-one position as a useful signal rather than a universal verdict.
Buick Also Performed Strongly as a Brand
The Encore GX’s result fits a wider pattern of strong dependability scores for Buick.
In the 2026 J.D. Power US Vehicle Dependability Study, Buick ranked first among mass-market brands with 160 reported problems per 100 vehicles. Lexus ranked first among premium brands with 151 problems per 100 vehicles. In this study, a lower number is better.
The dependability study examined problems experienced by original owners of 2023-model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. It found an industry average of 204 problems per 100 vehicles, the highest average recorded since the study’s methodology was redesigned in 2022.
Buick’s result was therefore considerably better than the industry average. MINI ranked behind Buick among mass-market manufacturers with 168 problems per 100 vehicles, followed by Chevrolet with 178.
The study also found that software, infotainment and mobile-phone integration were major sources of owner complaints across the industry. Modern vehicles increasingly depend on digital systems, meaning reliability is no longer limited to engines, transmissions and other traditional mechanical components.
Why the Encore GX May Appeal to Practical Buyers
The Encore GX is a small five-passenger crossover designed mainly for commuting, urban driving and everyday family transportation.
Its compact dimensions make it easier to park and maneuver than many midsize SUVs. At the same time, its raised seating position and flexible cargo area provide some of the practicality buyers expect from a crossover.
The 2026 model offers turbocharged three-cylinder engines producing between 137 and 155 horsepower, depending on configuration. Front-wheel-drive models use a continuously variable transmission, while all-wheel-drive versions use a nine-speed automatic. J.D. Power lists city fuel-economy estimates ranging from 26 to 30 miles per gallon.
The vehicle is not intended to be a high-performance SUV. Reviews commonly describe its strengths as comfort, quietness and easy everyday driving rather than rapid acceleration or sporty handling.
TrueCar characterizes the Encore GX as an upscale version of the subcompact-SUV formula, highlighting its quiet ride, interior materials and accessible pricing.
These qualities can make it attractive to buyers who want more refinement than a basic small crossover but do not want to pay the price associated with a traditional luxury badge.
Reliability Does Not Mean Mechanical Simplicity
The Encore GX uses small turbocharged engines and a substantial amount of electronic technology.
Turbocharging allows a small engine to generate more power, but it also introduces additional components and heat compared with a basic naturally aspirated engine. Long-term durability depends heavily on correct oil, suitable maintenance intervals and proper cooling-system care.
The vehicle’s infotainment, driver-assistance and connectivity systems can also become sources of owner complaints as the SUV ages. J.D. Power’s industry research shows that software-related problems are increasingly important in modern dependability scores.
The Encore GX’s current score indicates favorable owner experiences so far. It does not yet provide decades of evidence comparable with long-running models that have accumulated extremely high mileage across several generations.
One Buick dealership comparison also notes that the three-cylinder engines used by the Encore GX and Envista represent relatively newer technology with less long-term evidence, despite encouraging early reliability.
Owners Still Need to Follow the Maintenance Schedule
Even a highly rated vehicle can become unreliable when routine maintenance is delayed.
Engine oil is especially important in a turbocharged vehicle because it lubricates both the engine and the turbocharger. Old, contaminated or incorrectly specified oil can contribute to accelerated wear.
Owners should also monitor coolant, transmission fluid, brake fluid, tires and the vehicle’s battery. Warning lights, unusual sounds and changes in performance should be investigated rather than ignored.
A high reliability score should reduce concern about unexpected faults, but it should never be treated as permission to skip inspections or service.
Drivers can review recommended maintenance through the owner’s manual or the official Buick owner-support website.
Buyers Should Check the Exact Model Year
Reliability data is specific to the year and version being evaluated.
The 2026 Encore GX may receive a strong score, but that does not automatically mean every earlier Encore GX has the same record. Manufacturers can change engines, software, suppliers and assembly procedures during a model’s life.
A used buyer should research the exact model year, powertrain and service history rather than relying only on the current vehicle’s rating.
Previous accident damage, flood exposure, missed maintenance and poor-quality repairs can make an individual SUV less dependable than its model reputation suggests.
A pre-purchase inspection by an independent mechanic remains important, even when buying a vehicle with strong reliability scores.
Recall History Should Be Checked Separately
Reliability ratings and safety recalls measure different things.
A model can receive a good reliability score while still being included in a recall. A recall addresses a specific safety or compliance defect, while a reliability score usually reflects the number and type of problems reported by owners.
Before purchasing a new or used Encore GX, buyers should enter the VIN into the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recall database. Buick also provides recall information through its official owner-support tools.
The 17-character VIN is normally visible through the driver’s side of the windshield and printed on registration and insurance documents.
A VIN-based search is more reliable than checking only the model name because recalls may cover limited production dates or specific configurations.
Strong Reliability Does Not Guarantee Strong Resale Value
The Encore GX’s J.D. Power resale score is 77 out of 100, which the organization classifies as average.
This suggests that buyers may benefit from dependable ownership without necessarily receiving class-leading value retention.
Resale value can be affected by market demand, incentives on new vehicles, rental-fleet use, brand perception and the number of competing compact SUVs available.
A buyer planning to keep the vehicle for many years may care more about reliability and operating costs than short-term depreciation. Someone expecting to trade it after two or three years should examine projected resale value more closely.
The Encore GX Still Has Weaknesses
A high reliability score does not mean the Encore GX is the best choice for every buyer.
Some reviewers criticize its base engine for modest power, and the small three-cylinder engines can sound rougher than the four-cylinder engines used in some competitors. Passenger and cargo space may also be limited compared with a larger compact SUV.
Car and Driver gives the 2026 Encore GX a 7.5 out of 10 overall rating, placing other Buick models such as the Envista ahead of it in the publication’s own brand ranking.
CARFAX praises its ride comfort, fuel economy and usable cabin but identifies weaknesses including base-engine performance, cabin materials and pricing.
These criticisms do not contradict the reliability score. A vehicle can be dependable without being the fastest, roomiest or most luxurious option in its segment.
What the Ranking Means for SUV Shoppers
The most important takeaway is not simply that the Buick Encore GX finished first on one list.
Its 90 out of 100 J.D. Power quality and reliability score indicates that verified owners have reported relatively few problems. Buick’s strong performance in the 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study adds credibility to the idea that the brand is currently producing competitive, dependable vehicles.
The result may be especially interesting to buyers who automatically limit their search to Toyota, Honda or Lexus when reliability is the main priority.
The Encore GX offers another option, particularly for drivers seeking a small, comfortable and moderately premium crossover.
However, buyers should compare more than one score. Price, passenger space, driving performance, insurance costs, resale value and dealership support can be just as important during long-term ownership.
The 2026 Buick Encore GX may not lead every SUV category, but its strong reliability rating makes it a model worth considering rather than overlooking.
