LEGO Pokémon SMART Play does more than add lights and sounds to familiar brick-built characters. The interactive system attempts to translate the central Pokémon experience finding creatures, forming bonds, training abilities and competing in battles into physical play without requiring a television, console or phone during normal use.
Early hands-on demonstrations suggest that the Pokémon range represents a stronger showcase for LEGO’s SMART Brick technology than its first Star Wars releases. Instead of using electronic effects primarily to recreate familiar scenes, the Pokémon sets give the technology a functional role. A Pokémon can respond to movement, recognize tagged accessories, react to another creature and remember information that affects future battles.
The first range includes 12 sets featuring characters such as Pikachu, Charizard, Jolteon, Gengar, Mewtwo, Squirtle, Eevee, Lapras and Garchomp. According to the official LEGO Pokémon SMART Play announcement, the sets launch on August 1, 2026, in selected markets, with prices ranging from $14.99 to $119.99 in the United States.
The SMART Brick Gives Each Pokémon a Personality
The SMART Brick is the electronic core of the system. Once inserted into a compatible Pokémon model, it uses light, sound, motion detection and sensing technology to respond to the way the figure is handled. LEGO says the technology contains more than 20 patented innovations and is designed to provide interactive play without keeping children focused on a screen.
The results appear more character-driven than simple sound-effect buttons. A Pokémon may make noises when moved, respond to an accessory or fall asleep after being left alone. Two SMART Brick-equipped Pokémon can also recognize each other and exchange reactions when placed nearby.
During an early Engadget hands-on demonstration, the figures responded with individual cries, conversations, sleeping noises and battle reactions. The sounds do not always closely reproduce those heard in the video games or animated series, but their playful presentation gives the figures a distinct LEGO identity.
That personality is important because Pokémon has never been based entirely on combat. Feeding, travelling, resting and developing a connection with a partner are equally important parts of the franchise. SMART Play gives those quieter activities a meaningful presence instead of treating the figures only as battle pieces.
Training Changes More Than the Sound Effects
Training accessories included in selected sets allow Pokémon to improve before entering a battle. The SMART Brick can recognize tagged equipment and record interactions, creating a sense of development similar to increasing a creature’s strength in a video game.
The Training House with Pikachu, for example, includes a training dummy, a hidden bed, a buildable sandwich, a Poké Ball and interactive environmental elements. Pikachu can be fed, rested and trained as part of an ongoing play routine. The 400-piece set includes one SMART Brick, four SMART Tags and a charger, making it one of only two launch products that provides the complete technology package.
These interactions help solve a common weakness in technology-enhanced toys. Lights and sounds can be entertaining during the first few minutes, but they may lose their appeal when they do not influence anything else. Pokémon SMART Play connects activities together. Training can affect performance, healing restores health and previous interactions help establish a continuing relationship between the trainer and the creature.
The approach also preserves room for traditional LEGO creativity. The electronic system reacts to actions, but it does not dictate every storyline. A child can follow the intended activities, rearrange the environment or combine components from different sets to create an original training ground.
Battles Capture the Logic of the Pokémon Games
Battling is where the SMART Play system becomes most convincing. Two Pokémon containing SMART Bricks can compete when their figures are moved toward each other in an attacking motion. The technology tracks health and considers characteristics such as elemental type advantages when determining the outcome.
A Fire-type Pokémon therefore does not simply produce a generic attack sound. Its performance can depend on the opponent it faces, while damage, healing and defeat become part of the interaction. A losing Pokémon can faint, and a tagged healing item can restore its condition before another round. Training equipment can also improve its capabilities.
The flagship Charizard vs. Jolteon Ultimate Battle set is designed around this feature. The 751-piece package includes both Pokémon, two SMART Bricks, four SMART Tags and a charger. Because both figures contain an interactive brick, two players can begin battling without moving technology between models.
This system does not attempt to reproduce the full complexity of competitive Pokémon. There are no extensive move menus, detailed numerical statistics or lengthy turn-selection screens. Instead, it simplifies the recognizable rules into physical actions that children can understand quickly. Movement becomes an attack, lights communicate status and sounds confirm the result.
All-in-One and Compatible Sets Require Careful Buying
The launch collection is divided into two categories. All-in-One sets contain at least one SMART Brick, SMART Tags and a charger. Compatible sets contain tagged characters or accessories but do not include the electronic brick required to unlock the complete interactive experience.
Only the Pikachu Training House and Charizard vs. Jolteon Ultimate Battle are All-in-One products in the first wave. The other 10 releases are expansion sets. A buyer purchasing Jigglypuff Concert, Mewtwo’s Lab Break or Umbreon vs. Garchomp Championship Battle as a first set would receive a complete physical LEGO build, but not the main electronic component.
The distinction is particularly important because SMART Bricks are not sold separately. The official LEGO SMART Play guide explains that the complete starter experience comes through an All-in-One set, after which the brick can be transferred into compatible models.
This structure makes the less expensive sets accessible as expansions, but the real entry price is $69.99 for Pikachu’s Training House. The $14.99 Jigglypuff Concert may look like the lowest-cost introduction, yet it requires a SMART Brick from another purchase to deliver the advertised interactive functions.
The Physical Designs Mix Strong Builds With Blocky Faces
The collection includes a broad mix of display-friendly models and play-oriented environments. Larger Pokémon such as Charizard, Lapras, Mewtwo and Garchomp have enough scale to create recognizable silhouettes, articulated bodies and expressive poses.
Smaller or rounder characters present a greater design challenge. Early hands-on impressions found that the squared LEGO interpretation suits naturally angular Pokémon such as Geodude and Bidoof more effectively than characters known for softer shapes. Jigglypuff and Jolteon may appear unusually rectangular, while models such as Lapras and Charizard translate more naturally into bricks.
Even when a face looks slightly unconventional, the sets contain thoughtful franchise details. Mewtwo’s laboratory includes a Master Ball, Pokémon SMART Tags display character portraits and Pokédex numbers, and Squirtle’s buggy can trigger vehicle noises when used with a SMART Brick.
Screen-Free Play Comes With a Small Update Caveat
Normal SMART Play interaction does not require a screen. New Pokémon All-in-One sets are designed to work immediately after assembly and charging. However, a SMART Brick taken from an earlier LEGO SMART Play set must receive a software update before it can recognize the Pokémon content.
That update is installed through the LEGO SMART Assist app. The phone is therefore used for occasional maintenance rather than as a controller during play. Once updated, an existing SMART Brick can be moved into Pokémon-compatible sets and used without keeping the device nearby.
This distinction gives LEGO a reasonable balance between expandable technology and physical play. The system can receive new content as the range grows, while the central experience remains focused on bricks, characters and direct interaction.
SMART Play Finally Finds Its Ideal Franchise
Pokémon is particularly well suited to interactive LEGO technology because the franchise already revolves around relationships, progress and responsive creatures. SMART Bricks do not feel like an unrelated electronic feature added to increase novelty. They support actions that Pokémon fans already expect: feeding a partner, improving its abilities, recognizing its type and preparing it for battle.
The first wave is not inexpensive, and families must understand the difference between All-in-One and Compatible products before purchasing. Some character designs also translate into LEGO form more successfully than others. Nevertheless, the underlying play system appears thoughtful, expandable and closely connected to the source material.
Rather than replacing the building experience, SMART Play gives the completed model something meaningful to do. That combination makes LEGO Pokémon feel less like a static licensed collection and more like a physical trainer journey that can continue long after the instructions have been completed.
