How Far Should a PS5 Be From Your Body? Sony’s Official Safety Distance Explained

Most PlayStation 5 owners think about viewing distance, controller comfort and ventilation when arranging a gaming setup. Far fewer notice that Sony also specifies a minimum distance between the PS5 console and the user’s body.

According to Sony’s official safety documentation, a PlayStation 5 console should be installed and operated at least 20 centimetres, or approximately 8 inches, away from a person’s body. This distance applies to the console itself and is connected primarily to regulatory requirements concerning the PS5’s wireless radio transmitters.

For most conventional gaming setups, the requirement is easy to meet. A PS5 placed beside a television, on a media cabinet or underneath a desk will normally sit much farther than 20 centimetres from the player. The guidance becomes more relevant when the console is placed immediately beside a chair, beneath someone’s legs, on a bedside table or directly against the body during temporary use.

Sony Specifies a Minimum Distance of 20 Centimetres

Sony’s North American PlayStation 5 safety guide states that the console should operate with its radio transmitter at least 20 centimetres, or 8 inches, from a person’s body. The document says the equipment complies with Federal Communications Commission and Canadian radiofrequency exposure requirements when used according to these conditions.

The same basic instruction appears across multiple PS5 models and regional manuals. Recent PlayStation 5 and PS5 Pro documentation also tells users to maintain a minimum distance of 20 centimetres between the operating console and the body.

This does not mean that a player must sit exactly 20 centimetres from the console. It means the console should not be positioned any closer than that during normal operation. Greater distance is acceptable and will already be present in most living-room and desktop arrangements.

A gaming chair positioned several feet from the television easily exceeds the requirement. Even a desktop PS5 setup will usually comply as long as the console is not pressed against the user’s leg, torso or chair.

Why Does the PS5 Have a Body-Distance Requirement?

The PlayStation 5 contains wireless networking technology that communicates over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth frequencies. Sony’s documentation identifies 2.4GHz wireless LAN and Bluetooth operation, along with 5GHz wireless LAN support. These systems allow the console to connect with wireless networks, controllers, headsets and other supported accessories.

Because the PS5 contains radio transmitters, it must comply with radiofrequency exposure regulations in the countries where it is sold. The United States Federal Communications Commission classifies transmitting equipment according to how closely it is normally used to the human body.

Under the FCC framework, a mobile transmitting device is generally expected to maintain at least 20 centimetres of separation between its radiating structure and nearby people. Equipment designed to operate closer than 20 centimetres can be treated as portable equipment and may require a different exposure evaluation.

The 20-centimetre instruction is therefore best understood as a tested operating and regulatory condition. It should not be interpreted as evidence that briefly moving closer to a PS5 automatically causes harm. Instead, owners should arrange the console according to the conditions under which its radiofrequency compliance and normal operation were evaluated.

The 20-Centimetre Rule Is Not the Same as Ventilation Clearance

Two different measurements are often confused when discussing PS5 placement. Sony specifies a minimum body separation of 20 centimetres, while its ventilation guidance recommends leaving at least 10 centimetres between the console and a wall surface.

The 10-centimetre clearance helps air move through the console. Sony also advises against placing the PS5 on thick carpet, covering it with fabric or installing it inside a narrow space where heat can accumulate. Dust should not be allowed to block the vents.

A console could satisfy one requirement while failing the other. For example, a PS5 installed inside a tightly enclosed television cabinet might be several metres from the player but still have inadequate ventilation. Conversely, a console could have plenty of open air around it while sitting directly against someone’s chair or leg.

A suitable setup should satisfy both conditions. The PS5 should remain at least 20 centimetres from the body, while the surrounding arrangement should provide at least 10 centimetres of wall clearance and unobstructed airflow.

Heat Is Another Reason to Avoid Close Physical Contact

Radiofrequency compliance is not the only reason the PS5 should not rest against the body. The console generates heat during operation and expels warm air through its ventilation system.

Sony warns users not to maintain bodily contact with the console or with air leaving its vents for an extended period. Prolonged exposure under those conditions could cause a low-temperature burn, even when the surface does not initially feel hot enough to cause immediate injury.

The console should therefore never be treated like a laptop that can rest on someone’s legs. It should remain on a stable surface with its stand or feet installed according to the instructions for that model.

The PS5 should also be unplugged and allowed to cool before its covers are removed for cleaning, storage expansion or maintenance. Sony notes that the internal unit may remain hot immediately after use.

Does the Same Distance Apply to the DualSense Controller?

The DualSense wireless controller is designed to be held, so it follows different operating conditions from the console. Sony’s current PS5 Pro safety guide states that the wireless controller should keep its radio transmitter at least 10 millimetres from the body, excluding the hands, wrists, feet and ankles.

This does not prevent normal gameplay. The controller is specifically designed for direct use with the hands. The separate wording mainly addresses other forms of prolonged body contact, such as resting an active controller tightly against the torso.

The console’s 20-centimetre requirement should therefore not be mistakenly applied to the controller. The two products have different designs, antennas, expected operating positions and compliance conditions.

Extra Care May Be Needed Around Medical Devices

Sony warns that radio waves may affect certain electronic and medical equipment, including pacemakers. Anyone using a pacemaker or another implanted medical device is advised to consult a doctor or the device manufacturer before using the PS5’s Bluetooth or wireless LAN functions.

The safety guide also notes that magnets in PlayStation products may interfere with pacemakers, defibrillators, programmable shunt valves and some other medical devices. Sony advises against placing these products close to affected equipment or people who use it.

The standard 20-centimetre console separation should not replace personalized medical guidance. An implant manufacturer or qualified medical professional may recommend a different distance depending on the device and its susceptibility to wireless signals or magnets.

Where Should a PS5 Be Positioned?

A media cabinet, television stand or open desk area is generally suitable when the console has adequate support and airflow. It should remain away from beds, couches, loose fabrics and locations where someone could lean against it during a long gaming session.

The PS5 should not be placed directly on a carpet with long fibres or hidden inside a tightly enclosed cabinet. The vents should remain clear, and the rear exhaust should not blow continuously against a player’s skin.

Placing the console several feet from the normal seating position will comfortably exceed Sony’s minimum body-distance instruction. A larger separation does not harm wireless controller performance under ordinary conditions because Bluetooth is designed to operate across a normal room.

The Minimum Is 20 Centimetres, but Normal Setups Provide More

The official minimum distance between an operating PlayStation 5 console and a person’s body is 20 centimetres, or around 8 inches. That measurement relates mainly to wireless radiofrequency compliance, while separate placement guidance requires at least 10 centimetres of clearance from a wall for ventilation.

Most players do not need to redesign their gaming rooms because a console beside a television is already much farther away. The instruction primarily discourages unusually close placement, extended bodily contact and setups in which the PS5 sits directly beside or against the user.

Maintaining reasonable distance, keeping the vents open and placing the console on a stable surface protects both the player and the hardware. The safest arrangement is not complicated: the PS5 should remain off the body, out of enclosed spaces and surrounded by enough room to release heat properly.
