How to Switch From ChatGPT to Claude Without Losing Your Memory, Projects or Important Context

Switching from ChatGPT to Claude no longer has to mean starting with an empty account that knows nothing about a user’s preferences, work or ongoing projects. Claude now provides a memory-import feature that can transfer useful context from another AI assistant, including communication preferences, professional details, recurring projects and instructions about how responses should be written.

However, the process is not a complete account migration. Claude currently states that conversation history from another AI provider cannot be imported as native Claude chats. Users can transfer memory, manually recreate projects and upload selected files, but their entire ChatGPT sidebar will not automatically appear inside Claude. The safest approach is therefore to preserve the original data first and then move the most valuable information in several stages.

Export the Full ChatGPT Account Before Changing Anything

The first step should be creating a complete backup of the ChatGPT account. This protects previous conversations and other account information even when not all of it can be transferred directly into Claude.

OpenAI’s official ChatGPT data-export guide explains that a user can open the profile menu, select Settings, enter Data Controls and choose Export Data. A confirmation must then be completed before OpenAI prepares the downloadable archive.

The export is delivered by email or SMS and may take as long as seven days to arrive. Once it is ready, the download link expires after 24 hours, so the ZIP file should be downloaded and stored somewhere secure as soon as possible. The archive includes the user’s chat history and other relevant account data.

This backup should be treated as the permanent record of the ChatGPT account. Even when only a small number of conversations appear important today, an older discussion may contain research, writing, code, customer information or project decisions that become useful later.

Transfer ChatGPT Memory Separately

The full account export preserves information, but Claude’s memory importer does not require the entire ZIP file. Instead, Anthropic recommends asking the current AI assistant to produce a structured list of everything it remembers.

The user can ask ChatGPT to write out all saved memories, response preferences, ongoing projects, professional details, frequently used tools and recurring instructions. Claude’s official memory import and export guide provides a detailed prompt specifically designed for this purpose.

That prompt requests information such as preferred tone, formatting requirements, personal working style, job information, active goals, technical tools and corrections previously given to the assistant. It also asks the existing service to avoid omitting or heavily summarizing the stored context.

ChatGPT memory and chat-history reference are not exactly the same. OpenAI explains that saved memories contain details specifically retained for future use, while reference chat history can draw useful information from earlier conversations without permanently storing every detail. Important rules and preferences should therefore be requested explicitly rather than assuming that one automatic memory summary will include everything. The distinction is explained in OpenAI’s saved memories documentation.

Copy Custom Instructions and Permanent Writing Rules

Custom instructions should also be copied manually before the switch. These may include preferred language, tone of voice, formatting rules, professional background or instructions such as avoiding bullet points, using a specific point of view or adding external sources.

Memory import may capture some of these preferences, but a manual copy provides greater control. The user should open ChatGPT’s Personalization settings, copy the custom instructions into a separate document and review them before placing equivalent guidance in Claude.

This is especially important for people who use AI for repeatable professional tasks. A content writer may have rules for article length and SEO formatting, while a developer may have preferred programming languages, code standards and documentation conventions. Without these instructions, Claude may know what the user is working on but still produce responses in an unfamiliar style.

Claude allows users to modify its stored understanding through the Memory settings. It can also accept project-specific instructions, which may be more appropriate when a rule should apply to only one client, workflow or technical environment.

Import the Prepared Memory Into Claude

After preparing the memory text, the user can open Claude and go to Settings, followed by Memory, and select Start Import. Some accounts using the older interface may find the option under Settings and Capabilities instead.

The exported memory text can then be pasted into the import box. Selecting Add to Memory allows Claude to analyse the material and save the most useful information as separate memory entries. Claude provides a review area where the user can inspect what was retained and correct anything that was misunderstood.

Anthropic describes this import capability as experimental. It may not successfully retain every submitted detail, and Claude’s memory is designed to prioritise work-related information. Personal details that do not appear relevant to future collaboration may be excluded.

For this reason, the migration should not be considered complete immediately after selecting the import button. The user should ask Claude what it learned and compare the answer with the original memory document. Missing information can then be added through the memory-management box or by directly asking Claude to remember it.

Recreate Important Projects Instead of Moving Every Chat

Long-term work should be rebuilt as Claude Projects rather than placed entirely inside global memory. Projects provide separate workspaces for specific clients, research topics, marketing campaigns, software products or personal goals.

Claude’s official Projects guide explains that documents, text, code and other reference materials can be uploaded to a project knowledge base. Claude then uses those materials as context across conversations created within that project.

A project should contain a concise background document explaining the objective, current status, important decisions, terminology, output requirements and next actions. Relevant files can then be added around that summary. This is usually more effective than uploading hundreds of unfiltered ChatGPT conversations and expecting Claude to determine which details still matter.

Project instructions can also be added to control how Claude responds in that workspace. A marketing project might require persuasive but neutral copy, while an academic project might require formal language, citations and careful separation between evidence and interpretation. Claude applies those project instructions across the chats created inside that project.

Preserve Valuable Conversations as Reference Files

Although Claude cannot turn exported ChatGPT conversations into native Claude history, individual conversations can still be preserved as reference material.

Claude supports common file formats including HTML, JSON, TXT, PDF, DOCX and CSV. Selected conversations can therefore be extracted from the ChatGPT export, converted into readable documents and uploaded to the appropriate Claude Project or attached to a new chat.

This approach works particularly well for conversations containing final strategies, research conclusions, approved content, code documentation or important client decisions. The files remain source material rather than becoming searchable Claude chat history, but Claude can read them when they are attached or stored in project knowledge.

Users should avoid uploading the entire archive without review. Old conversations may contain duplicated drafts, outdated decisions, private data or instructions that conflict with current preferences. A smaller collection of well-organised reference documents generally creates cleaner and more reliable context.

Check Workspace Restrictions Before Depending on Export

Not every ChatGPT workspace supports the same export process. OpenAI currently provides data export through Settings for Free, Plus, Pro and eligible ChatGPT Edu accounts. It is not available through ChatGPT Business or Enterprise workspaces.

Someone using a managed company workspace should therefore check organizational policies before attempting a migration. Business information may belong to the employer, and moving client records, internal documents, source code or confidential conversations into a personal Claude account could violate company rules.

The same caution applies to uploaded documents and project files. Before transferring information between platforms, the user should remove unnecessary personal data, passwords, financial records, confidential customer information and any material that cannot legally or contractually be shared with another provider.

Keep ChatGPT Until the Claude Setup Has Been Tested

The original ChatGPT account should remain active until Claude has been tested on real tasks. A user can provide Claude with a familiar assignment and compare whether it follows the same style rules, understands current projects and recalls the correct professional context.

Any gaps should be corrected in Claude’s Memory settings or within individual project instructions. Claude allows users to view, edit or delete memory entries and to disable memory or past-chat search when those features are not needed.

A successful migration does not require every old conversation to exist in the new interface. It requires the new assistant to understand the information that still affects current work while the complete historical archive remains safely stored elsewhere.

By backing up the ChatGPT account, exporting memory, copying permanent instructions, rebuilding projects and attaching selected conversations as reference files, a user can move to Claude without losing the context that matters most. The process is not a one-click transfer, but it offers a practical way to change AI assistants without rebuilding years of preferences and project knowledge from the beginning.
