Americans Can Still See the 2026 Solar Eclipse Here’s Where and How to Watch

The total solar eclipse arriving on August 12, 2026, will not cross the continental United States like the celebrated eclipses of 2017 and 2024. Its path of totality instead runs through parts of the Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain and a small area of Portugal.

That does not mean Americans will completely miss the event.

People across parts of Alaska and the northern United States will be able to see a partial solar eclipse without leaving the country. Those seeking the full experience of totality can travel to Iceland, Greenland or Spain, while everyone else can follow live broadcasts from observatories and science organizations.

NASA confirms that the partial eclipse will be visible across parts of the northern United States, from Alaska to North Carolina, as well as most of Canada. The visibility and amount of Sun covered will vary considerably by location.

When the 2026 Solar Eclipse Will Happen

The eclipse takes place on Wednesday, August 12, 2026.

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon moves between Earth and the Sun, temporarily blocking some or all of the Sun from view. People standing inside the Moon’s narrow central shadow experience a total eclipse, while those under its wider outer shadow see only part of the Sun covered.

The path of totality will begin in the Arctic region and cross Greenland, western Iceland, the Atlantic Ocean, northern Spain and a small corner of northeastern Portugal. NASA’s official 2026 eclipse overview shows the narrow route where the Moon will completely cover the Sun.

Outside that path, a much broader region will experience a partial eclipse. This includes portions of North America, most of Europe and parts of northwestern Africa.

The event will unfold at different local times across the world. In Alaska and northern Canada, it will occur during the morning. Across the northern contiguous United States, it will generally begin around midday and continue into the afternoon. In Europe, the eclipse will happen later in the day, with totality in Spain taking place close to sunset.

Americans in 26 States May See a Partial Eclipse

Although no part of the contiguous United States lies inside the path of totality, approximately 26 states are expected to receive at least some partial-eclipse visibility.

The best American views will generally occur farther north. Alaska is expected to see the deepest partial phase within the United States, while northern states closer to Canada should see a more noticeable portion of the Sun covered than locations farther south.

NASA describes the American visibility zone as extending from Alaska toward the northern and eastern United States, reaching as far south as North Carolina in some areas. The exact boundary and eclipse magnitude depend on the observer’s coordinates and whether the Sun is above the local horizon during the event.

The partial eclipse across North America will not turn daytime into night. A large part of the Sun may remain visible even at the maximum phase, and the environment may not become dramatically dark.

That does not make the event uninteresting. Through certified eclipse glasses, viewers may see the Sun gradually transform into a curved crescent as the Moon passes across it. Small gaps between tree leaves can also act as natural pinhole projectors, producing many crescent-shaped images on the ground.

Observers can use NASA’s maps or a location-based eclipse calculator closer to the date to determine the beginning, maximum and ending times for their city.

Traveling Abroad Is the Only Way to Experience Totality

Americans who want to see the solar corona and experience complete daytime darkness must travel into the path of totality.

Western Iceland is one of the most prominent destinations. Areas inside the path may receive more than two minutes of totality, and the Sun will remain higher above the horizon than it will from many Spanish viewing locations. However, Iceland’s frequently changing weather and cloud cover create uncertainty.

Greenland offers another option, particularly along its eastern side. Its remote Arctic scenery could make the eclipse extraordinary, but travel logistics, limited accommodation and weather conditions make it a more demanding destination.

Northern Spain is expected to attract the largest crowds because it is easier to reach and generally has favorable summer weather. The path crosses locations including parts of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, the Basque Country, Castile and León, Aragon, Valencia and the Balearic Islands. Cities such as A Coruña, Bilbao, Zaragoza and Valencia are positioned within or close to totality.

Spain’s eclipse will occur very low in the western sky near sunset. That creates the possibility of a visually striking eclipsed sunset, but it also means buildings, hills, trees or low clouds could block the view.

Travelers should select a location with a completely open western horizon rather than assuming that any city inside the path will provide an unobstructed experience.

A Partial Eclipse Is Not the Same as Totality

A partial eclipse and a total eclipse are scientifically related but visually very different.

During a partial eclipse, some portion of the Sun remains exposed. The sky generally stays bright, the solar corona is not visible to the unaided eye and viewers must continue wearing eye protection throughout the event.

During totality, the Moon completely blocks the Sun’s bright surface. The surrounding sky darkens, bright stars or planets may become visible and the faint solar corona appears around the Moon.

Even a 99 percent partial eclipse does not reproduce totality. The remaining one percent of the Sun is still bright enough to keep the sky illuminated and damage unprotected eyes.

That distinction is why eclipse travelers must verify that their viewing site is inside the path, not merely near it. Moving a relatively small distance outside the totality boundary can change the experience from complete coverage to a very deep partial eclipse. Eclipse Glasses Are Required Across the United States

Every American viewing the eclipse from within the United States will experience only a partial phase. Therefore, certified solar-viewing protection must remain in place whenever the observer looks directly at the Sun.

Ordinary sunglasses are not sufficient, regardless of how dark they appear. Cameras, telescopes and binoculars also require solar filters attached securely to the front of the optical equipment.

Looking through an unfiltered telescope or binoculars while wearing eclipse glasses is extremely dangerous. The concentrated sunlight can damage the filter and cause severe eye injury almost immediately.

People traveling into the path of totality may remove eclipse glasses only during the brief period when the Sun is completely covered. The glasses must be put back on as soon as any bright portion of the Sun begins reappearing.

NASA’s eclipse safety guidance explains that indirect methods, such as pinhole projectors, are safer alternatives for children or anyone without approved glasses.

Weather May Decide Whether the Eclipse Is Visible

No destination can guarantee clear skies.

Clouds can completely hide an eclipse even when the observer is positioned perfectly inside the path. Travelers should therefore consider historical weather patterns, transportation flexibility and the availability of alternate locations.

Spain generally offers better prospects for clear August skies than Iceland or Greenland, but its low sunset angle creates another vulnerability. A single band of cloud near the horizon can block the critical minutes around totality.

Iceland’s Sun will be positioned more favorably above the horizon, but the country’s Atlantic weather can change rapidly. Greenland may provide clear Arctic conditions in some locations, though travel between alternative sites could be difficult.

Experienced eclipse travelers often stay mobile and examine short-term forecasts in the final days before the event. A refundable hotel reservation, rental vehicle and several possible viewing locations can improve the chance of success.

The Perseid Meteor Shower Adds Another Attraction

The August 12 eclipse arrives near the annual peak of the Perseid meteor shower.

After the eclipse ends and the sky becomes fully dark, viewers in suitable locations may be able to watch meteors produced by debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle. The combination has led astronomers to describe August 12 as one of the most important skywatching dates of 2026.

The meteor shower will be easier to see from dark locations away from city lights. Spain may provide particularly good opportunities because night follows soon after its sunset eclipse.

In Iceland and Greenland, lingering summer twilight at northern latitudes may make faint meteors harder to see even though the total eclipse itself is well positioned.

Americans Can Also Watch the Eclipse Online

People outside the visibility region or unable to travel can still follow totality through live online broadcasts.

NASA, observatories, universities and astronomy organizations commonly stream eclipses from several locations. Multiple feeds are valuable because clouds may obstruct one site while another remains clear.

A livestream cannot fully reproduce the sudden darkness, cooling air and unusual atmosphere of standing inside totality. It can still provide detailed telescope views of the Moon’s movement, the solar corona and the diamond-ring effect.

NASA’s eclipse page will be one of the most reliable places to check for official viewing resources as the date approaches.

The Next Total Eclipse in the United States Is Still Years Away

The 2026 event will provide Americans with a partial eclipse at home, but the next total solar eclipse visible from U.S. territory will occur in northwest Alaska on March 30, 2033.

A total eclipse will then cross parts of Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota on August 23, 2044. The next major coast-to-coast-style total eclipse affecting a broader portion of the United States arrives on August 12, 2045.

That long wait helps explain the interest in traveling for the 2026 eclipse.

Americans do not have to leave the country to see the Moon pass across the Sun on August 12. Residents of Alaska and numerous northern states may receive a worthwhile partial view from home. Those wanting the unforgettable darkness of totality, however, will need to travel to Greenland, Iceland, Spain or the small affected part of Portugal.
