Tesla is facing another major federal safety investigation, this time over a suspension component that owners say can suddenly separate while the vehicle is moving.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened a preliminary evaluation covering an estimated 1,198,300 Tesla vehicles, including 2018–2020 Model 3 sedans and 2021–2023 Model Y crossovers. Regulators are investigating reports that the front lower lateral link can detach from the suspension assembly, potentially causing a loss of directional control and leaving the vehicle undriveable.
The investigation follows 156 owner complaints.
So far, NHTSA says it has not identified any crashes, injuries, fires, or deaths associated with the issue. But the agency is concerned because many owners reported that the failure happened with little or no warning.
That combination—more than a million potentially affected vehicles and a suspension failure that can occur unexpectedly—is why the investigation matters.
What Is the Front Lower Lateral Link?
The component under investigation is part of the front suspension.
