Tesla and Other Automakers Recall 4.3 Million Cars in China Over Hidden Door Handle Safety Risks

Hidden door handles became one of the defining design trends of modern electric vehicles.

They look cleaner.

They improve aerodynamics slightly.

They help EVs appear more futuristic.

But China has now forced the auto industry to confront a much more basic question:

Can passengers actually find and open the door quickly after a serious crash?

Tesla and several other automakers have recalled roughly 4.3 million vehicles in China because emergency mechanical door releases may be difficult to locate or operate when a vehicle loses low-voltage electrical power. It is the largest automotive recall in China’s history.

Tesla accounts for the majority of the affected vehicles, with approximately 2.98 million Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X vehicles included in the door-release recall.

The issue does not mean every affected electronic door handle will fail.

The concern is what happens in the worst possible moment—after a severe collision when the normal electronic release system may no longer work.

Why Electronic Door Handles Can Become Dangerous After a Crash

Traditional car doors are mechanically straightforward.

Someone pulls a handle.

A physical mechanism releases the latch.

Many newer EVs work differently.

The visible interior or exterior control may trigger an electronic mechanism rather than mechanically releasing the door directly.

Under normal conditions, that can work beautifully.

Press a button.

The window lowers slightly.

The electronic latch releases.

The door opens.

But electronic systems depend on power.

If a major collision damages the vehicle’s low-voltage electrical system, the ordinary electronic release may become unavailable.

Manufacturers therefore include mechanical emergency releases.

That sounds like a complete solution.

The problem is that those emergency handles can be surprisingly difficult to find.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation says the mechanical emergency handles in the recalled Teslas can visually blend into the surrounding interior, making them difficult to identify and operate during an emergency.

That is a much bigger issue when smoke, fire, injury or panic means occupants may have only seconds to escape.

Tesla Has Mechanical Releases—But They Aren’t Always Obvious

Tesla has never designed its vehicles without emergency mechanical door releases.

The criticism concerns how intuitive those releases are.

Someone familiar with the car may know exactly where to pull.

A passenger riding in the vehicle for the first time may not.

That distinction matters.

A driver might understand the emergency procedure because he owns the vehicle.

A child, elderly passenger, rideshare customer or emergency responder may have no idea where the mechanical release is located.

Reuters notes that some Tesla manual releases have been criticized for being hidden or insufficiently labeled, while other manufacturers provide more immediately recognizable mechanisms.

That turns what appears to be a minor design decision into a human-factors problem.

Safety equipment needs to work not only technically.

People need to understand how to use it under stress.

Tesla Is Recalling Nearly 3 Million Vehicles for the Door Issue

China’s regulator has divided Tesla’s door-related recall across locally produced and imported vehicles.

The affected population includes approximately 973,156 China-built Model 3 vehicles produced between March 2019 and April 2026 and around 1.96 million locally manufactured Model Y vehicles produced between November 2020 and April 2026.

Imported vehicles are included too.

The recall covers 35,590 imported Model 3s, 8,328 Model X vehicles and 2,123 Model S cars.

Tesla’s remedy demonstrates something unusual about modern recalls.

Many owners will not need major mechanical repairs.

Tesla will add clearer warning labels identifying the emergency release and distribute an over-the-air software update that changes window behavior after a serious collision.

The new software is intended to lower windows following certain severe crashes, potentially making emergency evacuation or rescue easier if normal door operation is compromised.

This Isn’t Only a Tesla Problem

Tesla helped popularize flush and electronically controlled door handles.

Other automakers followed.

That is why China’s recall extends well beyond one company.

Manufacturers affected include Xiaomi, Xpeng, Geely, Leapmotor, Chery, Dongfeng and others.

Leapmotor, for example, is recalling more than 371,000 C01 and C11 vehicles because their internal emergency handles can blend into the interior and be difficult to recognize.

Chery is recalling more than 68,000 iCAR 03 and Fengyun X3 vehicles for a similar issue involving emergency-handle covers.

Dongfeng is recalling more than 53,000 vehicles because emergency mechanical handles can also be difficult to identify after electrical failure.

The pattern makes one thing clear.

This is not a defective component supplied to a single manufacturer.

It is a broader design philosophy being challenged.

Why Did Automakers Start Hiding Door Handles Anyway?

Aerodynamics is one reason.

Air flowing across the side of a vehicle encounters less disruption when the handles sit flush with the bodywork.

For electric cars, every small reduction in aerodynamic drag can help efficiency and range.

There is also styling.

Flush handles make a vehicle’s side profile cleaner and more futuristic.

Tesla made them part of the brand’s minimalist identity, and many EV manufacturers subsequently adopted similar designs.

Some deploy automatically when the driver approaches.

Others remain completely flush until touched.

The problem is that optimizing for aerodynamics and appearance can conflict with emergency simplicity.

A mechanical handle sticking obviously out of a door may look old-fashioned.

It is also extremely easy to understand.

Exterior Handles Can Affect Rescuers Too

The risk is not limited to occupants trying to get out.

Emergency responders may be trying to get in.

Imagine a vehicle after a severe crash.

The battery system is damaged.

Electrical power is gone.

Passengers are unconscious.

A rescuer approaches a door and encounters an electronic handle that no longer deploys normally.

Now the handle is not simply inconvenient.

It can become another obstacle between rescuers and injured occupants.

Reuters says concerns surrounding hidden door designs have been connected with reports and lawsuits involving serious injuries and fatalities.

That has attracted regulators far beyond China.

China Plans to Ban Hidden Door Handles

The recall is not an isolated enforcement action.

China is moving toward fundamentally changing how car doors are designed.

Regulators plan to prohibit certain concealed door-handle designs from 2027, following growing concerns about emergency access.

That could have global consequences.

China is the world’s largest automotive market and the center of global EV manufacturing.

When Chinese safety rules change, automakers may decide that creating one compliant global design is easier than manufacturing completely different door systems for different countries.

So a rule created in Beijing could eventually influence vehicles sold in Europe, Australia and North America.

That has happened before with other automotive regulations.

Large markets can effectively create global standards.

The U.S. Is Examining Similar Concerns

American regulators have also started paying more attention to electronic door-release systems.

Reuters reports that U.S. regulators are examining the safety implications of hidden and electronically actuated door handles, although the United States has not ordered an equivalent nationwide Tesla recall.

That creates an interesting situation.

A Tesla Model Y produced under broadly similar design principles could receive a safety remedy in China while an American vehicle does not.

Whether that changes will depend on regulatory investigations and the evidence surrounding incidents.

The underlying design concern, however, is not geographically unique.

Electricity can fail after a crash anywhere.

Europe Is Asking Similar Questions

European regulators are also evaluating door-handle requirements as increasingly complex electronic entry systems spread across premium and electric vehicles.

That makes this larger than a Chinese recall story.

Cars are gradually replacing physical controls with electronics.

Door handles.

Gear selectors.

Climate controls.

Mirrors.

Dashboard buttons.

Even steering and braking systems increasingly incorporate electronic layers.

Most of these technologies work extremely reliably.

But emergency design requires asking a different question:

What happens when the electronics don’t work?

Door handles happen to be one of the clearest examples because the consequence of failure is easy to understand.

A passenger can become trapped.

The Fix Shows Why Modern Recalls Are Changing

Historically, recalling three million cars would have meant an enormous logistical operation.

Owners receive letters.

Dealership appointments fill up.

Technicians replace parts.

Manufacturers spend enormous amounts on labor.

Some aspects of the Tesla recall still require physical intervention because warning labels need to be added.

But the software component can be distributed remotely.

Tesla can send an OTA update to compatible vehicles without owners visiting a service center.

Other manufacturers are using similar combinations of labels, revised covers and software.

BAIC’s Arcfox Koala recall, for instance, will replace an emergency-release cover with one carrying clearer text and add an OTA strategy that lowers a window after a severe collision.

The ability to modify millions of cars through software can dramatically reduce the cost of correcting some safety issues.

It also reveals how deeply software now controls physical vehicle behavior.

Labels Sound Like a Small Fix, but Human Factors Matter

Some people may look at the recall remedy and wonder why millions of cars need to be officially recalled just to receive labels.

The reason is that emergency usability is part of safety.

Imagine an airplane emergency exit with the correct mechanical hardware but no clear markings.

Technically, the door works.

Practically, that is not enough.

Car manufacturers increasingly design interiors around minimalism.

Buttons disappear.

Handles blend into surfaces.

Functions move onto touchscreens.

That can produce beautiful cabins.

But emergency systems benefit from the opposite design philosophy.

They should be obvious.

Distinctive.

Easy to operate without instructions.

And understandable in darkness, smoke or panic.

That lesson goes well beyond Tesla.

EVs Make Emergency Door Design More Important, Not Less

Electric vehicles introduce unique considerations after crashes.

High-voltage batteries receive enormous attention because of fire risks.

But the vehicle also contains a conventional low-voltage electrical system responsible for many ordinary functions.

A collision can interrupt those systems.

Electronic locks and latches therefore need mechanical backups.

The important question becomes whether those backups are truly usable.

A mechanical release hidden beneath a trim panel may satisfy one technical requirement.

A clearly marked handle that any passenger can recognize immediately provides a very different level of emergency usability.

The Chinese recall suggests regulators increasingly care about that distinction.

Tesla Is Also Facing a Separate China Recall

The door-handle campaign is not Tesla’s only current recall in China.

Chinese regulators are separately recalling approximately 2.74 million locally manufactured Model 3 and Model Y vehicles over concerns involving driver-attention monitoring when assisted-driving features are active.

The regulator says the existing monitoring mechanism may not provide sufficient warning when a driver stops watching the road.

Tesla will address that issue through software, adding in-cabin camera monitoring alongside existing steering-wheel torque detection.

The two recall programs overlap significantly, so the numbers should not simply be added together as unique affected Tesla vehicles.

Still, the timing underscores how aggressively China is scrutinizing new vehicle technology.

China Is Becoming a Major EV Safety Regulator

China’s automotive market has transformed extraordinarily quickly.

Domestic manufacturers release new electric models at a relentless pace.

Technology cycles are shortening.

Vehicles increasingly include large screens, advanced driver-assistance systems, electronic controls and unconventional body hardware.

Regulators are now responding to that speed.

China’s State Administration for Market Regulation reported that 6.846 million vehicles were recalled in the country during 2025 across 190 recall campaigns.

The new hidden-door-handle campaign alone affects roughly 4.3 million vehicles, making its scale particularly remarkable.

It may become one of the most influential automotive safety actions of the EV era.

The Industry May Have Taken Minimalism Too Far

There is a larger design lesson hidden inside this recall.

Automakers have spent years removing physical complexity from vehicles.

Some changes are useful.

Others may prioritize appearance over usability.

A mechanical door handle has an enormous advantage:

Almost everyone already understands it.

There is no menu.

No software.

No battery.

No training.

Someone simply pulls it.

Electronic handles can improve aerodynamics and create a cleaner design, but they also introduce additional failure modes.

That does not mean the industry needs to return to 1980s door hardware.

It means new designs should remain intuitive when their electronics fail.

The Best Technology Should Fail Gracefully

That may ultimately be the most important part of China’s record recall.

The problem is not that electronically controlled doors exist.

The problem is what happens when they stop operating normally.

Good engineering considers failure states from the beginning.

If the screen freezes, critical functions should remain accessible.

If the battery dies, the door should still open.

If electronics stop responding after a collision, occupants should not need to remember a page from the owner’s manual.

China’s response makes that expectation explicit.

Tesla and numerous Chinese manufacturers now need to make emergency door releases easier to recognize, while future regulations are expected to restrict hidden-handle designs themselves.

The flush door handle became a symbol of the modern electric car because it looked futuristic.

This recall may help define the next stage of EV design.

The future can still look sleek.

But when something goes wrong, opening the door needs to remain extremely old-fashioned: obvious, immediate and dependable.
