A hardworking pickup is expected to tow trailers, carry equipment, survive rough roads and continue starting every morning long after its warranty expires. Not every truck manages that combination equally well.
The strongest evidence comes from vehicles already accumulating high mileage. The 2025 iSeeCars longevity study analysed almost 400 million vehicles to estimate which models were most likely to remain operational beyond 250,000 miles. The average pickup had an estimated 13 percent chance of reaching that milestone, while several heavy-duty and Toyota models performed substantially better.
These results do not guarantee that every example will last. Maintenance history, corrosion, towing practices, engine choice and previous ownership remain critical. The ranking also reflects older generations already on the road, so it should not be treated as proof that a newly redesigned truck will perform identically.
Still, the following nine pickups have some of the strongest statistical evidence for surviving years of demanding use.
1. Ram 3500
The Ram 3500 led the truck-specific longevity ranking with an estimated 39.7 percent chance of reaching 250,000 miles—more than three times the pickup average. Its position reflects a population of trucks frequently used for commercial towing, agricultural work and long-distance hauling.
Current models maintain that heavy-work focus. The 2026 Ram 3500 can tow up to 36,610 pounds when properly configured with the high-output 6.7-litre Cummins turbo-diesel engine. Ram also offers dual-rear-wheel versions for greater stability and load capacity.
A used Ram 3500 still needs careful inspection. Diesel emissions equipment, automatic transmissions, front suspension components and evidence of overloaded towing can turn an apparently durable truck into an expensive project.
2. Toyota Tundra
The Toyota Tundra ranked second among pickups, with a predicted 30 percent chance of lasting beyond 250,000 miles. It also placed fourth among all vehicle types in the broader longevity study.
Much of that reputation was established by earlier naturally aspirated V8 generations. The current Tundra uses twin-turbocharged V6 and hybrid powertrains, so its long-term record is still developing.
As a working truck, the 2026 Tundra offers up to 12,000 pounds of towing and 1,850 pounds of payload. An available 8.1-foot bed and factory power outlet broaden its usefulness for ranch, construction and recreational work.
Buyers comparing used Tundras should research the particular generation rather than relying on the badge alone.
3. Ford F-450 Super Duty
The Ford F-450 Super Duty ranked third, with an estimated 28.5 percent probability of reaching 250,000 miles. Its inclusion is especially notable because many F-450s spend their lives towing large equipment, commercial trailers and heavy fifth wheels.
Ford’s 2026 F-450 can achieve a maximum 40,000-pound gooseneck rating in a specific regular-cab, two-wheel-drive, dual-rear-wheel configuration equipped with the high-output Power Stroke diesel.
That enormous capability does not make every F-450 a wise second-hand purchase. Maintenance records matter more than mileage alone. Commercial trucks may accumulate highway miles quickly, but they can also experience prolonged idling, frequent regeneration cycles and constant operation near maximum weight.
4. Toyota Tacoma
The Tacoma ranked fourth among pickups and sixth across all vehicles, with a 25.3 percent predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. That was approximately twice the average for the pickup segment.
Its strength lies in handling moderate work without the size or operating expense of a heavy-duty truck. The 2026 Tacoma can tow up to 6,500 pounds when appropriately equipped and is available with five- or six-foot composite beds. Toyota also offers an integrated trailer-brake controller and trailer-focused blind-spot monitoring on selected versions.
Older four-cylinder and V6 Tacomas built much of the model’s longevity reputation. Current turbocharged and hybrid models bring more torque and technology but have not yet accumulated decades of real-world mileage.
5. GMC Sierra 2500HD
The GMC Sierra 2500HD recorded a 22 percent predicted chance of surviving beyond 250,000 miles, placing it fifth among pickups in the study.
Mechanically, the Sierra HD is closely related to the Chevrolet Silverado HD. It combines heavy-duty frames and axles with available gasoline or Duramax diesel powertrains, while GMC places greater emphasis on cabin materials and premium trims.
The 2026 Sierra 2500HD is offered with standard and long beds, multiple cab designs and tow/haul programming intended to reduce unnecessary shifting and improve cooling under load.
A luxurious Denali or AT4 cabin does not reduce mechanical wear. Used examples should still be inspected for fifth-wheel use, transmission behaviour, cooling-system maintenance and modifications that may have increased engine stress.
6. Ford F-250 Super Duty
The F-250 had an estimated 18.6 percent chance of reaching 250,000 miles, making it the highest-ranked three-quarter-ton Ford in the study.
It occupies a practical middle ground between ordinary light-duty pickups and the larger F-350 or F-450. Contractors, equipment owners and recreational haulers can obtain significantly more payload and towing capability than an F-150 without automatically moving into a dual-rear-wheel configuration.
Ford offers the 2026 Super Duty with gasoline and Power Stroke diesel engines, a fully boxed high-strength steel frame and technologies including onboard scales, trailer backup assistance and diesel exhaust braking. Maximum ratings depend heavily on configuration rather than model name alone.
For used purchases, a stock truck with documented servicing is generally more reassuring than one carrying aggressive tuning, oversized tires or deleted emissions equipment.
7. Ford F-350 Super Duty
The F-350 followed closely behind the F-250, with an 18.3 percent predicted chance of passing 250,000 miles.
Its higher gross-vehicle-weight ratings and availability with dual rear wheels make it better suited to large truck campers, gooseneck trailers and heavier commercial equipment. It can provide more payload than many F-250 configurations while remaining less specialized than the F-450.
The shared Super Duty platform means engine choice, axle ratio, cab style and rear-wheel configuration can change capability dramatically. Ford’s current lineup reaches up to 8,000 pounds of available payload and 40,000 pounds of gooseneck towing, though those maximums apply to specific models rather than every F-350.
A door-jamb payload label remains more useful than a brochure headline when evaluating an individual truck.
8. Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD
The Silverado 3500HD achieved a 17.4 percent predicted probability of reaching 250,000 miles, placing it eighth in the truck ranking.
Current Silverado HD models are available with a 6.6-litre gasoline V8 or 6.6-litre Duramax diesel paired with a ten-speed Allison-branded automatic transmission. The 2026 diesel model can tow up to 36,000 pounds in its highest-rated configuration, while the gasoline version reaches 19,080 pounds.
Its long-bed design, integrated bed steps and 12 standard tie-downs are practical for owners who regularly carry equipment rather than merely using the truck as daily transportation.
High-mileage Duramax examples can be durable, but repair costs for injectors, turbochargers, emissions systems and fuel-system contamination can be substantial.
9. Ram 2500
The Ram 2500 completed the ranking with a 17.3 percent chance of reaching at least 250,000 miles. That still placed it well above the 13 percent average for pickups.
The 2026 model can tow up to 20,000 pounds with diesel power or 17,750 pounds with the gasoline engine. Maximum payload reaches 3,930 pounds in selected gas configurations.
The Ram 2500 is often selected by buyers who need serious towing ability but do not require the payload rating or dual rear wheels of a 3500. Coil-spring rear suspension on many configurations can also provide a more comfortable unladen ride than some traditional heavy-duty setups.
As with the Ram 3500, maintenance quality and previous tuning matter greatly when evaluating a used diesel.
Longevity Depends on More Than the Nameplate
The study shows which models have historically produced a high proportion of quarter-million-mile vehicles. It does not identify the condition of a particular truck sitting on a dealer lot.
A well-maintained Silverado can outlast a neglected Tundra, while a lightly used F-250 can be a better purchase than a Ram 3500 that spent years towing beyond its ratings. Service records, oil-analysis results, frame corrosion, cold-start behaviour and evidence of commercial use can reveal more than odometer mileage alone.
Configuration also needs to match the job. A Tacoma may last for decades carrying tools and towing a small trailer, but repeatedly asking it to perform the work of an F-350 will accelerate wear. Conversely, buying a one-ton diesel for light commuting can create unnecessary fuel, tire and maintenance expenses.
The strongest long-term truck is therefore not simply the model with the highest statistical ranking. It is the correctly sized truck, equipped for the intended workload and maintained before small problems become major failures.
