Best Buy has recalled thousands of Insignia gas ranges because their front-mounted control knobs can be switched on accidentally by people, children or pets.
Unintended contact with a knob could release gas and ignite a burner without the owner realizing it, creating a serious fire and injury hazard. Consumers with an affected range should stop using its oven and contact Best Buy for a free set of compatible knob covers.
Which Insignia Gas Ranges Are Recalled?
The recall covers approximately 3,820 Insignia Front Control Gas Ranges sold in the United States. An additional 700 were sold in Canada.
The two affected model numbers are:
NS-RGFGSS1
NS-RGFCGS2
Both are stainless-steel gas ranges with five control knobs positioned across the front. The Insignia name appears near the bottom of the oven door.
Owners can locate the model number on a label inside the range’s bottom storage drawer. Not every Insignia appliance is included, so checking the exact model number is essential.

Why the Front Knobs Are Dangerous
The knobs can rotate when someone brushes against them or when a pet jumps near the front of the appliance.
A burner could begin releasing gas and ignite if the control reaches an active position. The risk becomes especially serious when a pan, towel, grocery bag or another combustible object has been left on the stovetop.
An accidental activation may also go unnoticed when it happens overnight or shortly before everyone leaves the home. A person may believe the appliance is completely off without realizing that one knob has shifted.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the problem creates a risk of serious injury from fire.
Has Anyone Been Injured?
Best Buy has received one report of a range knob being activated through accidental contact.
No injuries had been reported when the recall was announced on July 9, 2026. However, regulators do not require a serious injury or major house fire to occur before recalling a product with a confirmed hazard.
A single unintended activation can be enough to demonstrate that the control design allows a dangerous event to occur.
Where and When Were the Ranges Sold?
The affected ranges were sold exclusively through Best Buy stores nationwide and the retailer’s website.
They were available from November 2020 through March 2026 and cost between approximately $280 and $1,470. The appliances were manufactured in China and imported by Best Buy Purchasing LLC.
Consumers who no longer have their receipt may still be able to participate in the recall because eligibility is based primarily on the model of the range.
What Owners Should Do Immediately
The CPSC advises consumers to stop using the recalled oven and register for the recall remedy.
Until the knob covers arrive, owners should keep children and pets away from the front controls. Every knob should be checked before leaving the home, going to sleep or finishing work in the kitchen.
Nothing should be stored or placed on the stovetop when the range is not being used. This includes pans, cardboard packaging, plastic containers, paper towels, oven mitts and decorative covers.
Owners should also make sure that household members, cleaners, visitors and caregivers know about the recall.
Best Buy Is Providing Free Knob Covers
Best Buy is offering every affected consumer a free set of compatible control-knob covers with installation instructions.
The covers are intended to reduce the chance that a knob will rotate after casual contact. Best Buy will send the remedy after confirming that the consumer’s model is included in the recall.
Owners can register through the Insignia range recall portal or review Best Buy’s product recall page.

Consumers should use only the remedy provided or approved through the official recall. Improvised knob covers or homemade barriers may interfere with safe operation or fail to prevent accidental movement.
Can Owners Continue Using the Burners?
The official recall notice tells consumers to stop using the recalled oven immediately and provides precautions for the front-mounted knobs while they wait for the covers.
Because the same front controls operate the gas range, owners should follow Best Buy’s instructions closely and use extra caution around the entire appliance. Any uncertainty about whether the cooktop can be used safely before the repair should be addressed directly with Best Buy.
The burners should never be left unattended, and the knobs should be checked immediately after anyone or anything makes contact with the front of the range.
Pets Can Activate Front-Mounted Controls
The recall specifically identifies pets as a possible source of unintended activation.
A large dog may brush a knob while investigating the countertop. A cat could jump onto the range or nearby cabinets and make contact with the controls.
Food residue, cookware and cooking smells can make the stovetop especially attractive to animals. Keeping pets out of the kitchen may reduce the immediate risk, but it does not replace the free recall remedy.
Families should also avoid using the range as a storage surface, even when they believe the knobs are fully off.

Anyone who smells gas should avoid switching lights or appliances on or off because electrical contacts may create a spark.
Do not light a match, use the range or attempt to investigate with an open flame. People should leave the building promptly and call the gas provider or emergency services from a safe location.
A strong gas odor, hissing sound or burner that appears to be releasing gas without a flame requires immediate attention.
