9 SUVs Most Likely to Keep Going Past 250,000 Miles

A quarter-million miles is where many vehicles stop being ordinary transportation and start becoming survivors.

By 250,000 miles, an SUV may have carried a family through years of school runs, road trips, towing, bad weather, and thousands of daily commutes. It has probably needed brakes, suspension components, fluids, batteries, and other repairs along the way. Yet the most durable models can keep going because their fundamental engines, transmissions, structures, and supporting systems remain worth maintaining.

So which SUVs give an owner the strongest foundation for reaching that milestone?

Large-scale vehicle data provides some useful answers. iSeeCars analyzed nearly 400 million vehicles in its latest longevity research and found that SUVs occupied 11 of the top 25 positions among vehicles most likely to reach 250,000 miles. The average SUV had only a 4.3% predicted chance of getting there, while the strongest models performed several times better.

The numbers also reveal something important: longevity is not limited to one SUV design. Rugged body-on-frame models dominate the highest positions, but hybrids and family crossovers also appear.

Here are nine SUVs that give long-term owners particularly convincing reasons to keep watching the odometer climb.

Toyota Sequoia

If someone wants the strongest statistical argument for a 250,000-mile SUV, the Toyota Sequoia is difficult to ignore.

iSeeCars gives the Sequoia a 39.1% predicted chance of reaching at least 250,000 miles. That places it first among SUVs and first among all vehicles in the study. Compared with the 4.3% average for SUVs, the Sequoia is roughly nine times more likely to reach the quarter-million-mile mark.

Earlier generations also built their reputation around substantial body-on-frame construction and Toyota truck hardware. Older Sequoias equipped with naturally aspirated V8 engines became especially well known among owners who kept them for extremely high mileages.

A separate iSeeCars lifespan study found that the highest-mileage 1% of Sequoias reached at least 296,509 miles, illustrating just how far well-maintained examples have historically traveled.

That does not mean someone can ignore maintenance. A heavy SUV wears tires, brakes, suspension parts, and cooling components. But the Sequoia gives an owner an unusually strong starting point.

Toyota 4Runner

What happens when a manufacturer keeps a relatively traditional SUV formula alive for years instead of constantly reinventing it?

The Toyota 4Runner provides one answer.

The 4Runner has a 32.9% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, placing it second among SUVs in the latest iSeeCars analysis.

For much of its recent history, the 4Runner relied on a separate frame, naturally aspirated engine, conventional automatic transmission, and relatively proven four-wheel-drive hardware. That kind of mechanical continuity can become valuable after 150,000 or 200,000 miles because technicians understand the platform and replacement parts remain widely available.

Current iSeeCars model data also estimates the 4Runner’s average lifespan at nearly 197,300 miles, with a 48.5% chance of reaching at least 200,000 miles.

An owner still has to watch for rust, off-road abuse, suspension wear, and neglected drivetrain fluids. A Toyota badge cannot undo years of poor treatment.

But a properly maintained 4Runner has repeatedly demonstrated that 200,000 miles does not necessarily mean retirement.

Toyota Highlander Hybrid

Wouldn’t a complicated hybrid powertrain make an SUV less likely to survive extreme mileage?

The Toyota Highlander Hybrid challenges that assumption.

It ranks third among SUVs in the latest longevity study with an impressive 31% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. That makes it more than seven times as likely as the average SUV to reach that mileage.

The result is especially interesting because the Highlander Hybrid approaches longevity differently from a Sequoia or 4Runner.

It is a unibody family crossover rather than a heavy-duty body-on-frame SUV. Its hybrid drivetrain is designed around efficiency and everyday road use rather than traditional truck capability.

Yet Toyota’s long experience with hybrid systems appears to be producing vehicles that can endure serious mileage.

For a family that wants longevity without the fuel consumption of a full-size V8-era SUV, the Highlander Hybrid may offer one of the most convincing compromises available.

Lexus GX

The Lexus GX wears luxury badges and premium interior materials, but underneath, it has historically shared much of its engineering philosophy with Toyota’s rugged Land Cruiser Prado family.

That matters.

The Lexus GX has an 18.3% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, according to iSeeCars. That is more than four times the SUV average.

Older GX 470 and GX 460 models became especially attractive to high-mileage buyers because they combined traditional body-on-frame construction, capable four-wheel-drive hardware, and naturally aspirated Toyota V8 engines.

There is a catch.

A durable drivetrain does not make luxury equipment cheap to repair.

Suspension systems, climate controls, electronics, seating features, and other premium hardware can become expensive as a GX ages. Someone may therefore own a 250,000-mile GX with an excellent engine while still spending significant money keeping everything around that engine working.

Longevity and cheap ownership are not always the same thing.

Lexus RX Hybrid

The Lexus RX Hybrid provides an entirely different route to high mileage.

Instead of truck-based construction, it uses the comfortable crossover formula that made the RX one of Lexus’ most important vehicles.

Yet iSeeCars gives the hybrid RX a 17% chance of reaching 250,000 miles, roughly four times the SUV average.

That is another strong counterargument to the belief that hybrid batteries automatically make older vehicles disposable.

A high-mileage RX Hybrid still requires attention to battery health, cooling systems, suspension, wheel bearings, fluids, and ordinary mechanical wear. But the model’s statistical performance suggests that its electrified powertrain is not preventing owners from accumulating serious mileage.

For someone who does not need towing capability or off-road hardware, an RX Hybrid may make more sense than keeping a much larger SUV running for 15 or 20 years.

Honda Pilot

Toyota and Lexus dominate the upper end of the longevity rankings, but Honda also has an important entry.

The Honda Pilot carries a 13.1% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles. That is approximately three times the average SUV’s probability.

The Pilot’s appeal is different from that of a traditional truck-based SUV.

It has spent most of its life as a practical three-row family crossover powered by Honda’s V6 architecture. Millions of Honda vehicles have used related components over the years, giving owners access to a broad repair network and considerable technician familiarity.

But reaching 250,000 miles means paying attention to generation-specific maintenance.

Timing-belt service on applicable engines cannot be ignored. Neither can transmission fluid, cooling-system maintenance, or all-wheel-drive servicing.

A Pilot with 150,000 documented miles may therefore be a better long-term candidate than one showing 100,000 miles with almost no maintenance history.

At extreme mileage, records matter.

Toyota Highlander

The conventional Toyota Highlander proves that owners do not necessarily need a hybrid or body-on-frame SUV to have a credible shot at 250,000 miles.

iSeeCars estimates that the standard Highlander has a 12.7% chance of reaching that figure.

That is significant because the Highlander is fundamentally a family vehicle.

Many examples spend their lives commuting, carrying children, taking road trips, and handling ordinary suburban driving rather than pulling heavy trailers or traveling off-road.

That comparatively gentle use may contribute to their survival.

It also helps that Toyota has produced the Highlander in large numbers for years. Parts remain accessible, mechanics understand common problems, and buyers have substantial real-world maintenance history to study.

The lesson is simple: durability does not always require the toughest-looking SUV in the parking lot.

Chevrolet Suburban

Toyota may dominate the statistics, but American full-size SUVs have their own longevity champions.

The Chevrolet Suburban has an 11.8% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles, making it around 2.8 times as likely as the typical SUV to hit that mark.

Its longevity makes sense when its history is considered.

The Suburban has relied on full-size truck architecture for generations. Large numbers have served families, fleets, government agencies, towing users, and commercial operators.

That scale has another advantage.

When an SUV reaches 200,000 miles, parts availability becomes extremely important. A widely produced Suburban often benefits from abundant replacement components, used parts, aftermarket support, and mechanics familiar with GM truck powertrains.

That does not mean every generation is trouble-free. Transmission condition, cylinder-deactivation systems on applicable engines, rust, cooling systems, and towing history all deserve careful inspection.

But a well-maintained Suburban can remain useful long after many vehicles have left the road.

GMC Yukon XL

The GMC Yukon XL shares much of its foundation with the Chevrolet Suburban, so its appearance among high-mileage SUVs should not be surprising.

In iSeeCars’ current SUV ranking, the Yukon XL has a 9% predicted probability of reaching 250,000 miles, more than twice the SUV average.

An earlier iSeeCars lifespan analysis produced an even more striking figure. The highest-mileage examples demonstrated a potential lifespan of approximately 252,360 miles.

The Yukon XL’s advantage comes partly from its heavy-duty roots and partly from its repair ecosystem.

Because it shares so much engineering with other GM full-size trucks and SUVs, someone trying to keep one alive at 200,000 miles is not maintaining a rare or obscure platform.

Still, size creates costs.

Tires are expensive. Suspension components wear. Fuel consumption adds up. Towing can accelerate drivetrain wear.

A Yukon XL may have the ability to reach 250,000 miles, but an owner has to decide whether continuing to maintain it makes financial sense.

What Actually Makes an SUV Last 250,000 Miles?

The rankings reveal something more useful than a list of badges.

The strongest long-term SUVs generally combine proven engineering, large production numbers, repairable mechanical systems, good parts availability, and owners willing to maintain them.

Toyota dominates because it has repeatedly delivered those qualities across multiple models. But Honda, Lexus, Chevrolet, and GMC show that there is more than one formula for extreme longevity.

And there is one number every buyer should remember.

The average SUV in the iSeeCars study had only a 4.3% predicted chance of reaching 250,000 miles.

Reaching a quarter-million miles is still exceptional.

No SUV arrives there because its owner bought the correct badge and forgot about it. Fluids must be changed. Problems must be repaired before they become catastrophic. Rust must be controlled. Cooling systems, transmissions, suspension components, and other wear items cannot be neglected.

The best high-mileage SUV is therefore not simply the model with the strongest statistics.

It is the durable model that someone has cared for properly since the beginning.

When those two factors come together, 250,000 miles stops looking like the end of an SUV’s life.

For some of these vehicles, it may simply be another number on the odometer.
