These “Dancing Dots” Hidden in iPhone Settings Could Make Car Sickness Much Easier to Manage

Reading messages, watching videos or answering emails during a car journey can quickly turn an ordinary trip into an uncomfortable experience. A passenger may begin with mild dizziness or warmth before developing sweating, nausea and an urgent need to put the phone away.

Apple has built a potential solution directly into the iPhone. The accessibility feature, called Vehicle Motion Cues, places animated dots around the edges of the display. As the vehicle turns, accelerates or brakes, the dots move in response, giving the eyes visual information that more closely matches the movement detected by the inner ear.

The feature is not a guaranteed cure for motion sickness, and its effectiveness varies between individuals. However, it may help some passengers continue using their phones without becoming as uncomfortable.

Why Looking at an iPhone Can Trigger Motion Sickness

Motion sickness is commonly explained through sensory conflict. While a passenger looks at a relatively stationary phone screen, the eyes suggest that the body is not moving. At the same time, the vestibular system inside the inner ear detects acceleration, cornering and braking.

The brain receives two conflicting descriptions of what is happening. That mismatch can activate the symptoms associated with motion sickness, including dizziness, sweating, increased salivation, nausea, fatigue and difficulty concentrating.

The CDC Yellow Book’s motion-sickness guidance identifies this visual and vestibular mismatch as the most widely accepted explanation for the condition. It also explains why looking toward the road or horizon can help: the eyes begin receiving movement information that agrees more closely with what the inner ear is sensing.

Looking down at an iPhone removes much of that external visual context. The display stays in approximately the same position relative to the passenger, even while the vehicle moves through the surrounding environment.

How Apple’s Dancing Dots Work

Vehicle Motion Cues attempts to introduce some of the missing movement information onto the screen itself.

When activated, small animated dots appear along the edges of the iPhone display. Apple says the feature uses sensors already built into the device to detect changes in vehicle movement and represent them visually without covering the main content.

The dots respond when the car accelerates, slows or changes direction. They remain near the edges so that a user can continue reading, browsing or watching content in the centre of the screen.

Apple introduced the feature as part of its accessibility improvements in iOS 18. The company’s original Vehicle Motion Cues announcement explained that the moving dots are intended to reduce the sensory conflict that can prevent passengers from comfortably using an iPhone or iPad inside a moving vehicle.

The dots do not stabilise the car, alter the inner ear or medically treat nausea. They simply give the visual system an additional reference for the movement that the body is already experiencing.

How to Turn Vehicle Motion Cues On

The feature can be activated through the iPhone’s accessibility settings.

The user opens Settings, selects Accessibility and then chooses Motion. Inside that menu, Vehicle Motion Cues can be turned on manually or set to Automatic.

When Automatic is selected, the iPhone attempts to detect when its owner is travelling in a car or another road vehicle. The animated dots appear while the vehicle is moving and disappear when the movement stops.

Apple’s current Vehicle Motion Cues instructions also allow the feature to be controlled through Control Centre. This option is useful when a passenger wants to activate the dots only during particular journeys rather than leaving automatic detection enabled.

The same settings page allows the appearance to be adjusted. Users can select a regular or dynamic pattern, change the dot colour and increase either their size or number. Colour saturation automatically changes to preserve contrast against the content behind the dots.

These options may matter for someone who finds the default dots too distracting or too subtle to notice.

Does the Feature Actually Work?

The idea behind Vehicle Motion Cues is supported by the broader sensory-conflict explanation of motion sickness. Research reviews have found that visual motion cues may reduce discomfort in certain vehicle configurations by helping passengers anticipate or interpret physical movement. However, the results are not universal, and the design of the visual cues can influence their effectiveness.

Individual experiences also differ considerably. Some users report being able to read or work for much longer with the dots enabled, while others experience only a modest improvement.

A recent hands-on review published by The Verge described the feature as highly effective during an extended road trip. The reviewer reported being able to read and write in the passenger seat during winding journeys that would previously have caused nausea. That experience is encouraging, but it remains an individual account rather than a controlled clinical trial.

Motion sickness susceptibility varies according to age, genetics, previous exposure and health history. People with migraine, vertigo or vestibular disorders may be more susceptible, while repeated exposure can help some individuals gradually adapt.

Vehicle Motion Cues should therefore be treated as a low-risk tool worth trying rather than a guaranteed solution.

The Dots Work Best in the Right Position

Apple says Vehicle Motion Cues works best when the passenger is seated facing forward. That position allows the visual signals on the phone to correspond more naturally with the direction of travel.

A person sitting sideways or facing backwards may receive movement cues that feel less intuitive. The type of journey also matters. Gentle motorway travel may create less discomfort than a route containing sharp turns, frequent braking or uneven roads.

The feature may be most useful when activated before symptoms become strong. Motion sickness usually develops gradually, often beginning with stomach awareness, warmth, yawning or mild dizziness before progressing to nausea and vomiting.

Once significant nausea has developed, putting the phone away and looking toward a stable external reference may be more effective than continuing to focus on the display.

It Is Designed for Passengers, Not Drivers

Vehicle Motion Cues should never be used as a reason for a driver to look at an iPhone while operating a vehicle.

Apple explicitly states that the feature is intended for passengers and should not be used in situations that require attention to safety. The moving dots do not make reading, messaging or browsing safe while driving.

The Automatic setting may activate when the iPhone detects road travel, including situations where the owner is driving. A driver should ignore the phone and keep it mounted or stored according to local traffic laws.

The feature is intended to make screen use more comfortable only when another person is controlling the vehicle.

Vehicle Motion Cues May Not Be Enough for Everyone

Passengers who remain uncomfortable can combine the feature with established behavioural strategies. Looking forward through the windscreen, obtaining fresh air, avoiding heavy meals before travel and getting adequate sleep may reduce susceptibility.

The CDC notes that sleep deprivation, alcohol and nicotine can worsen motion sickness. It also advises that medications work best when taken before exposure rather than after severe symptoms begin, although effective motion-sickness medicines can cause drowsiness and may not be suitable for everyone.

Someone experiencing frequent or severe dizziness should not assume that every episode is ordinary car sickness. Symptoms occurring outside moving vehicles, persistent balance problems or episodes associated with hearing changes, severe headache or fainting may require medical evaluation.

A Small Accessibility Feature With a Practical Benefit

Vehicle Motion Cues is easy to overlook because it sits within the iPhone’s accessibility settings rather than appearing as a major home-screen feature. Yet it addresses a problem that prevents many passengers from reading, working or enjoying entertainment during journeys.

The moving dots cannot eliminate every form of motion sickness, and Apple carefully describes them as something that “may help.” Their value comes from offering a simple, built-in method that requires no additional accessory, subscription or medication.

For passengers who become nauseated whenever they look down at a phone, enabling the feature before the next journey could make a meaningful difference. The dots may appear unusual at first, but their movement gives the brain information that an otherwise static screen cannot provide.
