Installing a video doorbell seems simple enough.
Remove the old doorbell.
Attach the mounting bracket.
Connect the wires or insert the battery.
Mount the camera.
Done.
But there is one detail that can make the difference between a useful security camera and one that constantly misses visitors:
height.
Mount a video doorbell too high and its camera may capture plenty of faces while struggling with people approaching close to the door. Put it too low and motion detection can become less effective while the camera records an unnecessarily large portion of the ground.
For many popular video doorbells, the ideal mounting point is roughly 48 inches, or about 1.2 meters, above the ground.
That number is not arbitrary. The exact answer therefore depends on the camera’s field of view, motion-detection system and the physical layout of the entrance.

The goal is not simply to point the camera at someone’s face.
It is to position the entire detection system where it can recognize an approaching person early enough to be useful.
Around 48 Inches Is a Good Starting Point
For a conventional front entrance, approximately 48 inches from the ground to the doorbell is a sensible starting point.
Ring recommends this height for several of its doorbell installations.
Why not put the camera at eye level?
Because a video doorbell is not a conventional security camera.
Its wide-angle lens needs to capture both people and activity around the entrance. Depending on the model, its motion sensors may also cover an area that differs from the exact portion visible through the camera.
A person approaching the house should enter the detection area before reaching the button.
Mounting around four feet high creates a useful compromise between seeing faces and detecting approaching bodies.
Higher Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Better Faces
Someone might look at the front door and think:
“My eyes are about five and a half feet from the ground, so the camera should go there.”
That sounds logical.
But video doorbells generally use wide-angle lenses.
They do not need to sit directly in front of someone’s face to capture it.
A camera mounted lower can look upward and still record a visitor’s face while also covering packages, children and the approach to the doorway.
Mounting too high may actually create a less useful overall view.
The camera might capture the top of someone’s head as he gets close to the door while losing visibility of the area immediately below.
That can become particularly annoying when trying to see where a delivery driver placed a package.
Motion Detection Matters as Much as the Camera

the camera and the motion-detection system.
Depending on the model, motion detection may rely on passive infrared sensing, camera-based analysis, radar or a combination of technologies.

A doorbell with a head-to-toe vertical field of view may behave differently from a wide landscape-oriented camera.
The Steps Leading to Your Door Change the Calculation
Suppose the front entrance has three steps.
Where should the 48 inches be measured from?
That question matters.
The relevant reference point is generally the surface where visitors will stand and approach the door, but entrance geometry can complicate the ideal position.
A doorbell facing a flat porch sees people differently from one overlooking stairs.
Someone climbing stairs moves vertically through the camera’s field of view.
The camera may therefore need adjustment to capture an approaching visitor before he reaches the top.
This is where an angled mounting wedge can become more useful than simply moving the entire doorbell higher.
A Wedge Can Fix a Bad Viewing Angle
Video doorbell manufacturers sell wedge or angle mounts for a reason.
Imagine the existing doorbell wiring sits on a wall perpendicular to the door.
Installing the camera flat against that wall means much of its field of view points away from the actual walkway.
Moving it higher will not fix the problem.
Changing the horizontal angle will.
An angled mounting bracket can turn the camera toward the path visitors actually use.
Some wedges tilt vertically.
Others rotate the camera sideways.

Watch Where People Actually Approach From
The best video doorbell position is determined partly by human behavior.
Stand outside the house and look at the route someone naturally follows.
Does he walk directly toward the door?
Approach from the left?
Come up stairs?
Turn sharply from a driveway?
Walk along a narrow porch?
That route should influence the camera angle.
Motion detection tends to work best when the person spends enough time inside the detection zone for the system to recognize him.
If someone suddenly appears from behind a wall only two feet from the doorbell, even an expensive camera has very little time to detect, classify and begin recording.
Good positioning gives the system an earlier view.
Side-to-Side Movement Can Be Easier to Detect
Traditional passive infrared motion sensors often detect movement across their zones more effectively than someone moving directly toward them.
That can matter with certain doorbell designs.
A visitor walking straight toward a sensor may produce a different detection pattern from someone moving horizontally across its field.
Modern smart doorbells increasingly supplement sensor information with computer vision and other techniques, so this is not an absolute rule for every product.
Still, entrance geometry remains important.
If motion alerts are consistently late, changing the angle can sometimes produce a bigger improvement than increasing sensitivity.
Don’t Point Too Much of the Camera at the Sky
A poorly positioned doorbell can waste a substantial part of its image.
Sky.
Roof overhang.
Blank wall.
None of those areas usually helps identify a visitor.
Worse, bright sky can create exposure challenges.
The camera needs to handle an enormous brightness difference between daylight above and a shaded porch below.
A better angle concentrates the useful field of view around:
Faces.
Upper bodies.
Hands.
Packages.
The walkway.

But Don’t Point Everything at the Ground Either
The opposite mistake happens too.
Someone wants to see packages and angles the camera sharply downward.
Now deliveries look fantastic.
Visitors’ faces do not.
The ideal doorbell view balances package visibility with identification.
Many newer doorbells deliberately use taller aspect ratios for exactly this reason.
They can capture a person’s face and the doorstep simultaneously.
If package monitoring is especially important, check the live view before permanently tightening the mounting screws.
A few degrees can make a significant difference.
Test the Doorbell Before Finalizing the Installation
This may be the most useful installation advice of all.
Do not assume the position is correct because the measurements are correct.
Install the doorbell temporarily or loosely.
Open its app.
Walk outside.
Approach the entrance normally.
Walk from different directions.
Have someone of a different height repeat the test.
Put a package on the doorstep.
Check when the motion notification arrives.
Review the recorded clip.
The ideal result is not merely a beautiful still image after someone presses the button.
The recording should begin early enough to show the approach.
If every clip starts with someone’s hand already touching the doorbell, motion detection is arriving too late.
Motion Zones Can Reduce Unwanted Alerts
Physical positioning is only half the job.
Modern video doorbells frequently allow users to define motion zones.
That can prevent irrelevant areas from triggering recordings.
Suppose the camera can see a busy sidewalk.
Every pedestrian might trigger an alert.
Or perhaps cars moving along the street activate motion detection dozens of times per hour.
Instead of reducing sensitivity so much that genuine visitors are missed, define the active area around the driveway, walkway and porch where possible.

Place a typical parcel where a delivery driver normally leaves it.
Can the camera see the entire box?
Can it see someone bending down to pick it up?
Can it see the person’s face at the same time?
If not, a vertical wedge may provide the needed correction.
Children Create Another Reason Not to Mount Too High
A doorbell installed for the average adult can easily overlook shorter visitors.
Children.
Someone in a wheelchair.
A person bending down.
A delivery driver placing a parcel.

The wide-angle lens does the rest.
Again, the camera does not need to sit directly opposite someone’s eyes.
It needs to capture a useful scene.
That is a different objective.
Battery Doorbells Give You More Freedom
Wired video doorbells often inherit an inconvenient limitation:
the existing wires.
If the old mechanical doorbell was installed too high, too low or at an awkward angle, the new smart doorbell may end up there too unless someone relocates the wiring.
Battery-powered models remove much of that restriction.
They can generally be mounted where coverage works best, provided Wi-Fi connectivity remains strong enough.

Do not automatically put a battery doorbell where the old button was.

Was the sensor slow?
Perhaps.

Always check signal quality before blaming physical placement.
What If the Existing Doorbell Is Too High?
Do not immediately start drilling new holes.
First see whether an angled bracket solves the problem.
A downward-facing wedge can redirect the field of view toward visitors and the doorstep.
If motion detection remains unreliable, relocating the device may be worthwhile.
Battery models make this easier.
Wired installations may require extending or rerouting low-voltage doorbell wiring.
Anyone uncomfortable working with electrical wiring should follow the manufacturer’s instructions or use a qualified installer.
The point is that existing wiring should be treated as a convenience—not an unchangeable law.
So, What’s the Best Video Doorbell Height?
For many common installations, about 48 inches above the ground is an excellent starting point.
But it is not a universal law.
The correct height depends on:
The exact doorbell model.
Its camera field of view.
Its motion-detection technology.
The direction visitors approach from.
Whether the entrance has stairs.
Where packages are normally placed.
The position of existing wiring.
And whether the camera needs an angled mounting bracket.
The best installation therefore begins with the manufacturer’s recommended height and ends with a real-world test.
Walk toward the door.
Check the recording.
See whether the camera captures the face, body and doorstep.
Confirm that motion detection starts early enough.
Then adjust the height or angle if necessary.
A difference of several inches may not sound important when mounting a doorbell.
But when that doorbell is also a motion detector, package monitor and security camera, those few inches can determine whether it records someone approaching or only catches them after they are already at the door.
