Hundreds of children’s helmets sold through Walmart’s website have been recalled after federal testing found that they failed multiple safety requirements, including the impact test intended to reduce the force transmitted to a rider’s head during a crash.
The recall covers about 300 Semfri-branded children’s multipurpose helmets. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warned that the helmets may not adequately protect a child during a fall or collision, creating a serious risk of head injury or death. No related injuries had been reported when the recall was announced.
Parents and caregivers should stop using the affected helmets immediately. The official CPSC recall notice provides product-identification details and instructions for obtaining a full refund.
Which Children’s Helmets Are Being Recalled?
The recall involves Semfri children’s multipurpose helmets sold in size medium. They were marketed for children with head circumferences ranging from approximately 20.5 to 22.8 inches.
The helmets were available in orange, black, blue, navy blue, pink, red and white. Each one has black interior padding, black straps, a black buckle and a black plastic adjustment knob at the back. A circular black label inside the helmet displays the size.
The affected helmets were sold exclusively through Walmart.com from June through November 2025. Prices ranged from approximately $19 to $28.
The recall number is 26-239. Consumers should compare the helmet’s appearance and internal labeling with the photographs and description published by the CPSC rather than assuming that every child-sized helmet from Walmart is included.
The Helmets Failed More Than One Safety Requirement
Federal regulators said the recalled helmets did not comply with impact attenuation, positional stability, labeling and certification requirements under the mandatory U.S. bicycle-helmet safety standard.
The impact attenuation requirement is especially important because it measures how effectively a helmet reduces the force reaching the rider’s head when the helmet strikes a hard surface.
A helmet may look sturdy from the outside while still allowing excessive force to pass through its shell and inner liner. That weakness may not be visible during ordinary inspection, which is why laboratory testing is necessary.
The positional stability requirement evaluates whether the helmet remains on the rider’s head during a fall. A helmet that shifts or comes off can leave part of the skull exposed when protection is needed most.

What Happens During a Bicycle Helmet Impact Test?
Federal bicycle-helmet testing is designed to imitate some of the forces a rider could experience when falling onto pavement, a curb or another hard surface.

Why the Failure Creates a Serious Risk
Children can fall from bicycles even at relatively low speeds. Uneven pavement, sudden braking, loose gravel, vehicle doors and loss of balance can all cause the rider’s head to strike the ground.
A compliant helmet helps manage that impact by allowing its materials to deform and absorb some of the energy. If the liner does not absorb enough force, more acceleration may reach the child’s head and brain.
Head injuries can range from cuts and concussions to skull fractures and traumatic brain injuries. A helmet cannot eliminate every risk, but wearing one that satisfies the federal standard provides an important layer of protection.
The CPSC states that its bicycle-helmet regulations are intended to protect riders from head injuries caused by falls and crashes. Any helmet that fails one of the mandatory requirements violates federal consumer-product safety law.
What Parents Should Do With the Recalled Helmets
Consumers should stop allowing children to wear the recalled helmets immediately, even when the helmet has never been involved in a crash and appears undamaged.
Semfri is offering a full refund. To receive it, consumers must destroy the helmet by cutting its straps and send a photograph of the destroyed product to the recall email address provided by the company.
Cutting the straps prevents the recalled helmet from being reused, donated or resold. Parents should not pass it to another family or leave it somewhere another child could retrieve it.

Parents should look beyond phrases such as “sports helmet” or “multisport protection.” The interior label should state that the product complies with the CPSC bicycle-helmet standard when it is intended for cycling.
A skateboard-only helmet may meet a different standard and should not automatically be treated as a substitute for a certified bicycle helmet.
Proper Fit Still Matters With a Compliant Helmet
Passing the federal tests does not make a helmet effective when it is worn incorrectly.
The helmet should sit level on the child’s head rather than tilting far backward. Its front edge should remain low enough to protect the forehead without blocking vision.
Side straps should form a secure shape around the ears, and the chin strap should be tight enough to prevent the helmet from shifting while remaining comfortable. The rear adjustment system can help improve fit, but it should not replace correct strap positioning.
The CPSC’s rules require bicycle helmets to include fitting and wearing instructions because even a compliant helmet may provide reduced protection when it is loose or positioned incorrectly.
Parents should also replace a helmet after a significant impact. Damage to the energy-absorbing material may be internal and difficult to see from the outside.
Buyers Should Be Careful With Low-Cost Online Helmets
The Semfri recall is part of a broader pattern involving helmets sold through major online marketplaces that later failed mandatory safety requirements.
Low price does not automatically mean that a helmet is unsafe, and a higher price does not guarantee perfect protection. However, shoppers should confirm that the product provides clear manufacturer details, model information, sizing instructions and a statement of compliance with the CPSC bicycle-helmet standard.
Listings containing vague claims such as “professional protection” or “safety certified” should not be accepted without identifying the actual standard.
Consumers can search current notices through the CPSC recalls database before buying or when checking a helmet already in the home.
Parents should also be cautious with secondhand helmets because they may have been involved in a previous crash, recalled or stored under damaging conditions. A used helmet’s full history is rarely known.
The Recall Is Preventive, but It Requires Immediate Action
No injuries have been reported in connection with the recalled Semfri helmets, but that does not make continued use safe.
The purpose of the recall is to remove the products before a child experiences a crash in which the helmet fails to provide the expected protection.
A bicycle helmet is purchased specifically to reduce injury during an event that may happen without warning. When testing shows that the product cannot satisfy the required impact and stability standards, waiting for visible damage or a real-world failure defeats the purpose of wearing it.
