Bentley Torcal Breaks Cover: First EV Promises 300+ Miles and a Bold New Luxury SUV

Bentley has confirmed that its first fully electric production vehicle will be called the Torcal, marking one of the most significant changes in the British luxury manufacturer’s 107-year history.

For now, Bentley has revealed only a shadowy image of the vehicle’s rear and a small collection of headline details. The Torcal will be approximately five metres long, offer more than 300 miles of estimated driving range and make its full public debut in London on September 23, 2026. It will also establish a fourth model line alongside the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga.

Despite its historic importance, the Torcal will not attempt to reinvent Bentley as a futuristic technology brand overnight. Early previews suggest that the company is taking a more cautious approach, combining an electric platform with recognisable Bentley proportions, traditional craftsmanship and a more practical SUV body.

The Torcal Is Bentley’s First Fully Electric Model

Bentley already offers plug-in hybrid versions of several vehicles, but the Torcal will be the first production model in the company’s history to operate entirely on battery power.

The vehicle will enter the range beneath the Bentayga rather than replacing it. Bentley describes the newcomer as a “Luxury Urban SUV,” although its five-metre length means it will still be a substantial vehicle by conventional standards. The difference is that the Torcal is intended to feel more manageable in cities and more suitable for everyday use than Bentley’s larger SUV.

Early observers invited to see the vehicle reported that it is slightly smaller and lower than the Bentayga but provides greater passenger and luggage space. The absence of a combustion engine allows the designers to use the vehicle’s internal dimensions more efficiently, even while retaining a long bonnet and powerful exterior proportions. Bentley has not yet confirmed the battery capacity, motor output, acceleration time, charging speed or final production specifications. Those details are expected to form a major part of the September reveal.

The Torcal Name Has Two Meanings

The name continues Bentley’s tradition of drawing inspiration from dramatic natural landscapes. Torcal refers to El Torcal de Antequera in Andalusia, Spain, a protected limestone landscape known for its stacked rock formations, cliffs, caves and maze-like terrain.

There is also a deliberate connection to electric performance. Torcal is associated with the Latin verb torquere, meaning “to twist,” which is also the linguistic root of the word torque. Electric motors can produce strong rotational force immediately, making the name particularly suitable for Bentley’s first battery-powered vehicle.

The approach follows names such as Bentayga, Bacalar and Batur, each of which connects a Bentley model with a distinctive geographical location. The Torcal name therefore allows the company to signal technological change without abandoning its established naming strategy.

The Design Will Look Like a Bentley, Not a Generic EV

The teaser image focuses on the Torcal’s rear, revealing a sloping roofline, pronounced wheel arches and thin horizontal lighting. The roof appears to descend more sharply than the Bentayga’s, helping create a more aerodynamic shape that should reduce drag and support the targeted driving range.

At the front, the Torcal reportedly has a broad upright appearance and a large illuminated panel where a traditional radiator grille would normally be found. The panel incorporates three-dimensional crystal-like elements that can be illuminated or switched off. While an electric vehicle does not need the same airflow as a combustion-powered Bentley, the visual treatment allows the Torcal to retain the imposing front-end presence associated with the brand.

The proportions remain recognisably Bentley. A long bonnet, muscular rear haunches and a strong shoulder line are intended to prevent the Torcal from appearing like an anonymous electric crossover.

Bentley’s decision reflects a broader change in electric-vehicle design. Earlier EVs were often deliberately unusual because buyers wanted their technology choice to be visible. Bentley CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser believes many luxury customers now want an electric vehicle that feels authentic to the manufacturer rather than a dramatic styling experiment. His comments and the first detailed impressions are included in WIRED’s early look at the Torcal.

Physical Controls Will Remain Inside the Cabin

Bentley appears unwilling to replace every traditional control with a touchscreen. Early cabin descriptions indicate that the Torcal combines OLED displays with physical switches for commonly used functions.

The main display reportedly curves downwards towards a row of tactile controls. Bentley has also decided against installing a separate passenger screen, even though such displays are becoming common in premium electric vehicles.

This approach may appeal to customers who value modern technology but do not want basic functions hidden inside multiple software menus. The Torcal will still offer a highly digital environment, yet its physical interfaces are expected to preserve some of the mechanical quality associated with Bentley interiors.

All-round powered doors and a switchable glass roof are also expected. The final interior materials, rear-seat features and customisation options have not yet been publicly detailed, but Bentley is likely to position craftsmanship as one of the vehicle’s main differences from less expensive electric SUVs.

More Than 300 Miles of Range Is Promised

Bentley says the Torcal will provide more than 300 miles of range, although the company has not clarified which testing standard was used for that estimate. European WLTP and United States EPA ratings can produce different results, so the final certified figure may vary by market.

A range exceeding 300 miles would make the vehicle suitable for longer journeys rather than limiting it to urban driving. However, range alone will not determine whether the Torcal feels competitive. Charging speed, thermal management, efficiency and the consistency of its performance will be equally important.

Reports suggest that the vehicle will use Volkswagen Group electric architecture related to systems developed for high-performance Porsche and Audi models. Bentley has not yet published complete platform specifications, so claimed motor outputs and charging rates circulating before the official reveal should be treated as expectations rather than confirmed Torcal figures.

The Torcal Arrives During a Difficult Period for Luxury EVs

Bentley is entering the electric market at a complicated time. Several premium manufacturers have revised electric-product plans as demand developed more slowly than expected, particularly for expensive battery-powered vehicles.

Bentley itself postponed its plan to become an electric-only company from 2030 to 2035. Its updated Beyond100+ electrification strategy allows plug-in hybrids and combustion models to remain available alongside electric vehicles for a longer period.

That strategy makes the Torcal an addition to the range rather than an immediate replacement for existing models. Customers who are not ready for a fully electric Bentley will still have access to hybrid and combustion-powered alternatives.

This gradual transition reduces Bentley’s exposure while allowing it to learn how customers use and respond to its first EV. It also places considerable pressure on the Torcal, which must attract new technology-focused buyers without alienating traditional Bentley owners.

Production Will Support Bentley’s Crewe Transformation

Bentley is transforming its historic manufacturing facility in Crewe, England, to support a new generation of vehicles. The company’s A1 building is being prepared to assemble its first electric car as part of the wider “Dream Factory” redevelopment.

The investment is intended to combine electric production with the hand-finished materials and personalisation processes for which Bentley is known. This balance will be important because battery technology alone cannot justify the vehicle’s expected luxury positioning.

The Torcal must therefore deliver more than rapid acceleration and a quiet cabin. Buyers will expect distinctive materials, extensive customisation, carefully controlled ride quality and the sense of occasion normally associated with the Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga.

September Will Reveal Whether the Torcal Can Redefine Bentley

The first teaser establishes the basic character of the Torcal without answering its most important questions. Bentley has confirmed the name, body style, approximate size, range target and September 23 reveal date, but performance, pricing, charging and production details remain undisclosed.

What is already clear is that Bentley is not treating electrification as a reason to abandon its identity. The Torcal appears designed to look, feel and function like a Bentley first, with battery power integrated into that experience rather than dominating it.

Its slightly smaller dimensions could make it more practical than the Bentayga, while its electric platform may provide greater interior space and immediate performance. At the same time, its arrival during a difficult period for premium EVs means technical specifications alone will not guarantee success.

Bentley has described the Torcal as potentially the most carefully considered vehicle in its history. The full unveiling will show whether that careful approach has produced an electric SUV capable of satisfying traditional luxury buyers while giving the company a credible foundation for its electric future.
