Updating apps can feel like a small task that is easy to postpone. A person opens their phone, sees several pending updates, and thinks everything is working perfectly well anyway. Why spend time downloading a new version when the current one still opens?
That decision may seem harmless, but app updates are not released only to change icons or add new buttons. Developers regularly use updates to repair security weaknesses, fix crashes, improve compatibility, correct performance problems, and introduce features that newer versions of an operating system expect.
When someone continues using an outdated app for weeks or months, they may slowly lose more than new features. Their security, privacy, performance, and overall experience can also be affected.
So what actually happens if they do not update their apps?
Security Problems Can Remain Unfixed
One of the biggest reasons to update an app has nothing to do with appearance.
It is security.
Software can contain vulnerabilities that are discovered after an app has already been released. Once developers identify those weaknesses, they can release a newer version that fixes them. When someone keeps the old version installed, the security weakness may remain on their device.
That does not automatically mean someone will hack their phone the next morning. It does mean they may continue running software containing a problem that has already been corrected in a later version.

This is why a person who repeatedly taps “remind me later” may unknowingly be choosing convenience over a security improvement.

What happens when an app that used to work smoothly suddenly freezes, closes unexpectedly, or behaves strangely?
The problem may not always be the phone.

Developers continually discover bugs after software reaches real users. An app might crash under a particular condition, drain too much memory, display something incorrectly, or fail during a certain action. Once the developer identifies that issue, a fix can be included in an update.
A person who does not install the update continues using the version that still contains the problem.
This is particularly noticeable with frequently updated apps such as browsers, banking applications, messaging platforms, productivity software, maps, social networks, and cloud services.

Apps do not operate independently from the device around them.
They depend on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS, APIs, libraries, permissions, and other system components.
When an operating system changes, developers may need to change their apps as well.
Imagine someone updates their phone to a newer version of iOS or Android but continues running an app that has not been updated for a long period. Parts of that app may have been designed around older system behaviour.
What follows?
A feature may stop responding. Notifications may become unreliable. The camera may not open correctly. Location services may behave differently. A login process might fail. In more serious cases, the application may stop opening altogether.
This is why keeping the operating system current while ignoring app updates can create an unusual mismatch.
The phone moves forward while the application stays behind.
They Can Miss Important Features
Not every app update exists because something was broken.
Some updates simply make the application better.
A developer might introduce faster search, new editing tools, improved navigation, better accessibility, smarter notifications, new privacy controls, or completely redesigned features.
If someone never updates the app, they may wonder why other people appear to have options that are missing from their screen.
There may be nothing wrong with the person’s account.
They may simply be several versions behind.

Privacy Controls Can Also Change
Security and privacy often overlap, but they are not exactly the same thing.
An update might change how an application handles permissions, stores information, communicates with servers, or gives people control over their data.
Sometimes an operating system introduces new privacy requirements, and developers update their applications to work properly with those requirements.
An older version may not necessarily expose private information, but it can lack newer privacy controls or improvements available in the current version.
This is another reason blindly avoiding every update is not always the safest strategy.

Updating should therefore be thoughtful rather than completely automatic in every situation.

Could an app update actually make an application faster?
Sometimes, yes.
Developers routinely optimize code, reduce bugs, improve memory management, or modify the way an app communicates with online services.
An outdated application might eventually feel slower because the services around it have changed while its software has not.
A person may experience longer loading times, delayed notifications, unusual battery consumption, or repeated errors.
The frustrating part is that they may blame the phone itself.
They might delete photos, clear storage, restart the device, or even consider replacing it before realizing that several applications have not been updated in months.
An update will not solve every performance problem, but keeping important apps current removes one common source of unnecessary compatibility and stability issues.
Online Services May Eventually Reject Very Old Versions
Many modern apps are really interfaces connected to online platforms.
A banking app communicates with a bank’s servers. A messaging app connects to communication infrastructure. A streaming application communicates with content servers. A shopping app depends on payment, inventory, login, and recommendation systems.
Those online systems also change.
At some point, a company may stop supporting an old app version because maintaining compatibility with every previous release becomes impractical or insecure.
The person may then see a message explaining that they must update before continuing.
In some situations, certain features may stop working before the entire application becomes unavailable.
This is especially important for apps connected to payments, authentication, cloud storage, work systems, or other services where security standards change regularly.
The app may technically remain installed, but that does not mean the service behind it must support that version forever.
Should Every App Be Updated Immediately?
Does all of this mean a person should install every update the second it appears?
Not necessarily.
Occasionally an update introduces a new bug, removes a feature someone liked, changes the interface, or performs poorly on an older device. Some users therefore prefer to wait briefly and see whether major issues are reported.
That can be reasonable for non-critical applications.
However, there is an important difference between waiting a short time and ignoring updates indefinitely.
Security-sensitive applications such as browsers, password managers, financial apps, communication tools, and software containing important personal information generally deserve greater attention.
Automatic updates can also reduce the chance of forgetting them entirely.
On Apple devices, apps downloaded through the App Store are generally configured to update automatically by default, although users can manage the setting or update apps manually. Apple’s current instructions are available through Apple Support.
Google Play similarly allows Android users to update individual apps, update everything together, or configure automatic updating.
Is Ignoring App Updates Really Worth It?
A pending update notification may look insignificant.
But what is actually behind that small button?
It could be a security patch. It could fix the crash that keeps irritating a user. It could improve compatibility with the latest operating system. It might introduce a feature they have been waiting for, improve privacy controls, or prevent the application from becoming incompatible with an online service.
That is why updating apps should not be viewed only as digital housekeeping.
It is part of maintaining a device.
A person does not necessarily need to obsess over every minor release, but allowing important applications to remain outdated for months can create problems that would otherwise have been avoided.
The simplest approach is usually to keep automatic updates enabled for trusted apps and occasionally review what has changed. If an application is especially important for work, banking, passwords, communication, or personal information, keeping it current becomes even more valuable.
After all, when a developer has already fixed a known problem, why continue using the version that still contains it?
