Inside Google’s AI Power Shift: The Executive Moves That Reshaped Gemini and DeepMind

Google’s latest AI reshuffle did not happen because of one bad quarter, one delayed model, or one executive suddenly deciding to step aside.

It was the result of a much longer internal shift.

Over the past several years, Google has steadily pulled its most important artificial-intelligence work closer to the center of the company. Teams that once operated with greater independence have been consolidated. Product groups have been moved under DeepMind. Senior researchers have been given broader corporate roles. Meanwhile, co-founder Sergey Brin has become increasingly involved behind the scenes as competition from OpenAI, Anthropic, and other AI companies intensified.

That process reached a major turning point in August 2026.

Demis Hassabis moved from running Google DeepMind day to day into the role of chairman of Google DeepMind and chief scientist of Alphabet. His longtime deputy, Koray Kavukcuoglu, emerged with greater operational authority over Google’s AI development, while several senior researchers and technical leaders also departed or changed roles.

The reshuffle raises an obvious question.

But Google’s AI priorities changed dramatically after the arrival of ChatGPT in late 2022.

Generative AI suddenly became a commercial race.

Google could no longer afford to treat its best AI research primarily as an experimental laboratory. It needed models that could compete in search, productivity tools, cloud services, coding, smartphones, and consumer assistants.

Hassabis increasingly became responsible not just for scientific achievement but also for producing commercial AI systems.

Jeff Dean, one of the most important engineers in Google’s history and a longtime leader in the company’s AI efforts, left his role as chief scientist at Google DeepMind to pursue a new AI venture with other senior researchers.

When senior scientists leave during a major restructuring, employees naturally begin asking whether the organization’s culture is changing.

Some departures may simply reflect entrepreneurial opportunity.

The AI startup market is offering extraordinary amounts of capital, influence, and autonomy to elite researchers.

Google Is Prioritizing Commercial Speed

Sundar Pichai Is Bringing AI Closer to Himself

Rather than allowing major AI decisions to remain several layers removed from the CEO, Google has increasingly placed its most important AI executives directly under him.

Kavukcuoglu’s 2025 appointment as chief AI architect made that explicit.

That structure reflects how central AI has become to Alphabet.

Search, advertising, YouTube, Android, Cloud, Workspace, and hardware are all being reshaped by generative AI.

There is almost no major Google product untouched by Gemini.
