Storing an iPhone for Months? Keep the Battery Near 50% to Prevent Long-Term Damage

An iPhone placed in a drawer for several months can lose battery capacity even when nobody is using it. Lithium-ion batteries continue to age during storage, and their condition depends heavily on temperature and the amount of charge they hold when the device is switched off.

The safest preparation is surprisingly simple: bring the battery to approximately 50 percent, power the iPhone down completely and keep it in a cool, dry place. Storing it fully charged or completely empty can place unnecessary stress on the battery and increase the risk of permanent capacity loss.

This matters whether the phone is being kept as a backup device, saved for a family member, stored during extended travel or preserved before resale. The correct storage routine cannot stop chemical ageing entirely, but it can significantly reduce avoidable damage.

Why Battery Percentage Matters During Storage

An iPhone uses a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Like every rechargeable battery, it gradually loses its ability to hold energy as it chemically ages. Apple explains that chemical age is influenced by several factors, including the battery’s temperature history and charging pattern—not simply the number of years since the phone was manufactured.

A fully charged battery remains at a high state of charge, which can accelerate chemical stress when maintained for a long period. A nearly empty battery creates a different danger. Even after the phone has been switched off, the battery can continue losing a small amount of energy. If its charge falls too low, it may enter a deep-discharge state and become unable to hold a charge.

Apple’s battery storage guidance therefore recommends neither fully charging nor completely discharging a device before long-term storage. The company advises bringing it to approximately 50 percent instead.

The percentage does not need to be exactly 50. A reading somewhere near the middle is sufficient. There is no practical advantage in repeatedly charging and discharging the phone merely to reach a perfect number.

Charge the iPhone to Around 50 Percent

Before storage, the owner should check the current battery level. When it is below approximately 40 percent, the phone can be connected to a suitable charger until it reaches roughly half charge. When it is close to 100 percent, it can be used normally until the level falls toward 50 percent.

It should not be left connected to power throughout the storage period. Although an iPhone automatically manages ordinary charging and stops actively charging when full, Apple’s specific long-term storage recommendation is to store the device half-charged and powered down.

Owners of iPhone 15 models and later can choose a charging limit between 80 and 100 percent through Settings, Battery and Charging. However, the iPhone Charge Limit feature does not provide a 50 percent setting. The battery must still be brought manually to approximately half charge before the phone is switched off.

Optimized Battery Charging is useful during normal daily use because it reduces the amount of time an iPhone remains fully charged. It does not replace the 50 percent recommendation for a phone that will remain unused and powered down for months.

Shut the iPhone Down Completely

After reaching the desired charge, the iPhone should be powered off rather than left in sleep mode.

A sleeping phone continues supporting background functions and can gradually consume energy. Network searching, notifications, system processes and other activity may reduce the charge until the battery becomes excessively depleted.

Airplane Mode reduces wireless activity, but it is not the same as shutting down. For genuine long-term storage, Apple explicitly recommends powering the device off to avoid additional battery use.

The iPhone can be switched off through Settings, General and Shut Down. It can also be powered down using the appropriate button combination for the model. Once the screen is completely dark, it should not be restarted merely to check the percentage every few days.

Heat Is the Greatest Storage Threat

Temperature has a major influence on long-term battery health. A phone stored at the correct percentage can still experience permanent damage when left in an excessively hot environment.

Apple identifies 62°F to 72°F, or 16°C to 22°C, as the ideal comfort range for its devices. It warns that exposure to ambient temperatures above 95°F, or 35°C, can permanently reduce battery capacity. Even storing a battery in a hot environment without using it can cause irreversible damage.

An iPhone should therefore not be stored inside a parked car, unventilated attic, metal shed, area beside a radiator or cupboard exposed to strong direct sunlight. Temperatures inside enclosed spaces can become much higher than the surrounding room temperature.

Apple lists a broad iPhone storage range of -4°F to 113°F, or -20°C to 45°C, but its long-term guidance recommends a cool environment below 90°F, or 32°C. The safest practical location is a climate-controlled room that remains comfortably cool throughout the year.

Cold storage is not beneficial either. A refrigerator can expose the phone to condensation and moisture, while a freezer falls outside sensible consumer storage conditions. A normal indoor drawer or cabinet is safer.

Keep the Device Dry and Physically Protected

The storage location should be free from moisture and large temperature changes. Humidity and condensation can affect connectors, internal components and the phone’s exterior even when the device originally had water-resistance protection.

The iPhone can be wiped with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth before storage. It should then be placed somewhere that protects it from falls, pressure and sharp objects. Heavy items should not be stacked on top of it.

Apple warns that an iPhone battery can be damaged if the device is crushed, punctured, burned or dropped. A phone showing swelling, separation between the display and frame, unusual heat or other physical damage should not be placed into storage as though it were functioning normally. Apple or an authorised service provider should inspect it.

A simple protective case can prevent scratches, but the device should be clean and completely dry before being enclosed. It should not be sealed while warm from charging.

Check the Battery Every Six Months

A powered-off iPhone still loses some charge over time. For storage lasting longer than six months, Apple recommends bringing the battery back to approximately 50 percent every six months.

The phone can be switched on, allowed to display its current battery level and adjusted accordingly. When the percentage is very low, it should be charged to around halfway. When it remains above the middle range, it can be used briefly until it approaches 50 percent again.

Afterward, it should be powered off and returned to the same cool, dry location.

This six-month interval is a general guideline rather than a guarantee that every battery will discharge at the same rate. An older battery or one that already has reduced maximum capacity may lose charge more quickly. Checking somewhat earlier may be sensible when the battery condition was already poor before storage.

Do Not Expect Storage to Freeze Battery Health

Correct storage slows avoidable degradation, but it cannot preserve a lithium-ion battery permanently at its original condition.

Chemical ageing continues over time, even when the battery is not cycling through daily charging and use. An iPhone stored for a year may therefore show slightly lower maximum capacity when it is used again.

Battery age before storage also matters. Apple states that iPhone 14 and earlier batteries are designed to retain 80 percent of their original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles under ideal conditions. iPhone 15 batteries are designed to reach that level after 1,000 complete cycles, although actual results depend on how each device has been used and charged.

Long-term storage does not reset the cycle count or repair existing degradation. Its purpose is to prevent unnecessary additional stress.

What to Do When Taking the iPhone Out of Storage

An iPhone may not switch on immediately after several months in storage. This does not automatically mean the battery has failed.

Apple says a device removed from long-term storage may be in a low-battery state and could require approximately 20 minutes of charging before it becomes usable. It should be connected to an appropriate charger and allowed time to respond before troubleshooting begins.

Once it starts, the owner should allow the device to reach room temperature, install available iOS updates and review Battery Health under Settings and Battery. A significantly degraded battery may still operate, but it can provide fewer hours of use and reduced peak performance.

The Best Storage Routine Is Simple

The most effective preparation does not require special software, battery-conditioning accessories or a charger connected for months. The iPhone should enter storage at approximately 50 percent, be switched off completely and remain in a cool, dry, protected environment.

When the storage period exceeds six months, the battery should be checked and returned to approximately half charge twice a year. Heat, full charge and deep discharge create the largest avoidable risks.

Following this routine will not stop natural chemical ageing, but it gives an unused iPhone the best chance of returning with a functional battery and useful remaining capacity.
