Google Play is expanding its age-confirmation technology worldwide, giving Android developers a standardized way to receive age-related signals and create more appropriate experiences for children, teenagers and adults.
The expansion centres on the Play Age Signals API, a privacy-conscious system that can provide an app with a user’s age range or supervision status without requiring the developer to collect an exact date of birth. The technology is already available in Brazil and is scheduled to reach Australia and Canada in mid-August 2026 before becoming available globally by the end of the year.
The move comes as governments place greater responsibility on app stores and developers to protect younger users. Rather than imposing one universal experience across every application, Google is providing developers with signals that can be used to adjust content, communication tools, purchasing options and other features according to a user’s age group.
How the Play Age Signals API Works
The Play Age Signals API is a connection between an Android application and the Google Play Store. A participating app can request age-related information associated with the person using it and then apply its own rules based on the returned response.
The system does not simply tell a developer whether a user is a child or an adult. It can provide relevant signals about age ranges, account supervision and approval status, depending on the user, location and applicable regulatory requirements.
Google’s documentation also explains that the API can help developers determine when a significant app change may require parental approval. It can additionally inform an application when an earlier approval has been revoked, allowing the developer to respond appropriately rather than continuing to provide access under outdated consent.
The API remains in beta, and Google makes it clear that developers are still responsible for understanding the laws and policies that apply to their applications. Integrating the system may assist with compliance, but it does not automatically remove every legal obligation associated with age assurance or child protection.
Parents Can Share Age Ranges Through Family Link
Parents will be able to manage age-range sharing through Google Family Link, the company’s parental-control platform. Family Link already allows parents to supervise accounts, approve app downloads, manage screen time and control privacy-related settings.
Under the expanded system, a parent can enter or confirm a child’s age range once through the centralized Family Link dashboard. Apps that have integrated the Play Age Signals API may then request the relevant signal and deliver a suitable experience.
The information will not be shared automatically. Parents must choose to provide the age range before eligible apps can receive it. Adults can also share their own age-related information when an application requests confirmation.
Using a range instead of an exact birthdate reduces the amount of personal information exposed to individual developers. An application may need to know that a user belongs to a younger age category, but it may not need the person’s precise date of birth.
This distinction could reduce the number of apps independently collecting sensitive identity information. It also gives families a more consistent place to manage age-related permissions instead of completing a separate verification process inside every application.
Developers Retain Control Over the App Experience
Google is not requiring every developer to respond to age signals in exactly the same way. Each app can decide how its content, features and settings should change for different audiences, provided that the implementation complies with applicable laws and Google Play policies.
A social platform could limit direct messaging or public profile visibility for younger users. A game could adjust communication features, spending controls or advertising. A streaming service could filter mature material, while a community app could introduce additional moderation and reporting protections.
The system may be particularly useful for applications serving both adults and younger audiences. Without reliable age information, such apps often face a choice between applying restrictive settings to everyone or relying on self-declared ages that can be entered incorrectly.
Google’s existing target audience and app content guidance already requires developers to declare which age groups an app is designed for. Applications that include children in their intended audience must comply with additional Families Policy requirements, including rules covering advertising, data collection and appropriate content.
The new API gives developers another signal that can help connect those declared audience policies with the experience delivered to an individual user.
Strict Limits Apply to Age-Signal Data
The age information is not intended to become another source of marketing or behavioural data. Google’s terms state that information received through the Play Age Signals API may only be used to provide age-appropriate content and experiences in compliance with relevant laws.
Developers are prohibited from using the signals for advertising, marketing, analytics or user profiling. The information must also remain within the app that requested it and cannot be freely transferred to another application or service. Misuse may lead to API access being terminated and could result in an app being suspended or removed from Google Play.
Google further states that the Play Age Signals client library does not independently collect usage data. The API operates as a runtime interface with the Google Play Store, although developers remain responsible for accurately completing their Google Play Data Safety disclosures based on everything their own app collects, processes or shares.
These restrictions are significant because age-related information can be sensitive, even when it is presented as a broad range. Limiting its permitted uses may help prevent the system from becoming a tool for targeted advertising or commercial segmentation of children.
Age Confirmation Is Becoming a Global Platform Requirement
Google’s rollout reflects a broader change across the technology industry. Governments in several countries and US states are introducing or considering rules that require stronger protections for minors, parental consent for certain activities and age checks before access to restricted services.
A Reuters examination of age-assurance technology found that app stores, social platforms and verification providers are increasingly being expected to identify younger users while minimizing unnecessary personal-data collection. The challenge is creating systems that are accurate enough to support child-safety rules without requiring every website or application to hold copies of identity documents.
Apple has also expanded age-assurance features for developers through its Declared Age Range API. Both companies are moving toward a model in which the operating-system or app-store account provides a reusable signal, while individual developers decide how their applications should respond.
Platform-level signals may create greater consistency because the user or parent does not have to repeatedly submit the same information. However, the approach also places considerable influence in the hands of the companies operating the largest mobile ecosystems.
The API Does Not Replace Responsible App Design
Receiving an age range is only the beginning of the process. Developers must still decide what constitutes an appropriate experience for each age group and ensure that the decision is reflected throughout the application.
An app cannot claim to protect children simply because it has connected to an age-signals service. Its recommendation algorithms, social features, advertising systems, payment processes, privacy settings and reporting tools must also be designed with younger users in mind.
Google advises developers to evaluate whether navigation, visuals, language, rewards, sensitive themes and interaction features are suitable for the selected target audience. The company also warns that an app designed for both children and adults must comply with child-focused requirements wherever younger users may encounter advertising or data collection.
Developers should also avoid age screens that encourage users to provide a false answer. Google defines a neutral age screen as one that asks for age information without revealing which response is required to unlock restricted content.
What the Global Expansion Means
The worldwide rollout of the Play Age Signals API gives Android developers a more consistent foundation for handling age-related experiences across multiple markets. Instead of building a completely separate verification process for every country, an app may be able to use Google Play’s signal and then apply the requirements relevant to that region.
For parents, centralized age-range sharing could simplify the management of children’s digital experiences. For adult users, it may reduce repeated requests for exact dates of birth. For developers, it provides a practical method of adapting app features without collecting more personal information than necessary.
The system will not settle every debate surrounding age assurance. Questions about accuracy, consent, privacy, legal responsibility and access to online services will continue as regional regulations evolve.
Nevertheless, Google Play’s global expansion represents an important shift. Age awareness is becoming part of the infrastructure of mobile applications rather than an optional screen added by individual developers. The success of that approach will depend not only on whether apps adopt the API, but on how responsibly they use the signals once they receive them.
