Iran Claims Strike on Amazon Data Centre in Bahrain as Gulf War Targets Expand

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has said it targeted an Amazon-linked data centre in Bahrain, marking another potentially significant expansion of the war into civilian technology infrastructure across the Gulf.

The Guards claimed that the facility supported United States military and intelligence activities in the region. Iranian reports said cruise missiles were used and alleged that the targeted infrastructure was destroyed. However, the extent of any damage had not been independently verified, and Amazon and Bahraini authorities had not immediately confirmed that the facility was directly struck.

Coverage from Al Jazeera’s Middle East news service reported the Iranian claim as military exchanges intensified between Tehran and Washington. Bahrain separately said its air-defence systems had intercepted and destroyed several Iranian projectiles, although it did not publicly connect those interceptions to the alleged Amazon attack.

The lack of independent confirmation remains critical. During an active conflict, military statements often describe successful operations before satellite imagery, company updates or local authorities can establish what happened on the ground.

The Alleged Strike Forms Part of a Wider Iranian Response

The reported attack did not occur in isolation. Iran has launched missiles and drones towards American military positions and US-linked sites across Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan and Iraq following renewed American strikes inside Iran.

According to Reuters’ latest account of the regional fighting, Iran said it had attacked US posts in several neighbouring countries. The Revolutionary Guards also claimed significant damage to a surveillance tower used by the US Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. Jordan reported intercepting Iranian missiles and drones without suffering casualties or material damage.

Bahrain has particular strategic importance because it hosts the headquarters of the United States Navy’s Fifth Fleet. The country also contains financial, telecommunications and cloud-computing infrastructure used by businesses and public institutions across the Middle East.

Targeting an Amazon facility would therefore carry both practical and symbolic value for Iran. It would place pressure on a major American company while demonstrating that the conflict could affect digital services far beyond conventional military bases.

Amazon’s Bahrain Cloud Region Is Important to the Middle East

The reported target is associated with Amazon Web Services, Amazon’s cloud-computing division. AWS provides remotely hosted computing power, databases, storage and other digital services to companies, developers and government organisations.

Amazon launched its Middle East region in Bahrain in 2019. The official AWS announcement described it as the company’s first cloud region in the Middle East and confirmed that it was built with three Availability Zones.

An Availability Zone can contain one or more physically separate data centres with independent power and network connections. This design is intended to prevent a problem at one location from disabling an entire cloud region.

AWS documentation continues to list the Bahrain region, identified as me-south-1, as operating with three Availability Zones. The architecture allows customers to spread applications and stored information across different facilities, but it cannot eliminate every risk created by prolonged physical attacks.

Services hosted in Bahrain can support mobile applications, financial platforms, corporate systems, e-commerce operations and government workloads. Damage to one facility may therefore affect organisations that appear geographically or commercially unrelated to Amazon.

This Is Not the First Reported Attack on AWS Infrastructure

Amazon’s Middle Eastern facilities had already been affected earlier in the conflict. In March, AWS confirmed that its data centres in Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates suffered damage during drone strikes.

The company said two UAE facilities were directly struck, while a drone attack near its Bahrain infrastructure caused a physical impact. Power disruptions, structural damage and water released by fire-suppression systems affected cloud services, with AWS warning that full recovery would take time.

The Reuters report on the March AWS disruption said financial institutions were among the organisations affected by the outage. AWS advised customers to back up critical information and transfer essential workloads to unaffected regions.

Amazon later reported another disruption in its Bahrain cloud region following drone activity. The company helped customers move workloads elsewhere but did not initially confirm whether the facility itself had received a direct hit.

These previous incidents make the latest Iranian claim more credible as a statement of intent, but they do not prove that the newly reported attack achieved the damage described by the Guards.

Why Data Centres Are Becoming Wartime Targets

Modern conflicts depend heavily on digital infrastructure. Military operations require communications, intelligence analysis, logistics, mapping, data storage and coordination between forces. Many of those functions now rely on commercial technology providers rather than systems owned entirely by governments.

This creates a complicated distinction between military and civilian infrastructure. A cloud facility may host ordinary business websites alongside workloads used by defence contractors or government agencies. An attacker may therefore describe the site as a military-supporting target even when most customers are civilian.

The Guards accused Amazon’s Bahrain operations of contributing to American intelligence activity. Amazon has not publicly confirmed that the targeted infrastructure was being used for the specific military purposes alleged by Iran.

The growing role of commercial cloud systems means future conflicts may increasingly threaten data centres, fibre-optic routes, satellite ground stations and the electricity networks supporting them. A previous Reuters analysis of damaged AWS facilities cited warnings that adversaries could target computing infrastructure just as earlier conflicts targeted pipelines, refineries and oilfields.

The Risk Extends Beyond a Temporary Internet Outage

A damaged data centre does not necessarily cause the entire internet to fail. AWS customers can distribute systems across multiple facilities and regions, and Amazon can redirect some activity through unaffected infrastructure.

Nevertheless, a serious physical attack can still produce prolonged disruption. Power systems, cooling equipment, network connections and storage hardware may all require repair. Fire suppression can also cause water damage, even when the original explosion affects only part of a building.

Businesses that built their applications entirely inside the Bahrain region could experience greater difficulties than organisations using multiple regions. Financial platforms, delivery services and communications systems may become slow or unavailable if their operators cannot activate reliable backups.

The broader economic consequences could include interrupted payments, delayed transactions and reduced access to business records. Data-sovereignty laws may make recovery more complicated because some organisations are required to keep information inside a particular country or jurisdiction.

The incident therefore raises questions not only about Amazon’s security but also about whether regional companies have prepared for physical warfare affecting cloud infrastructure.

Bahrain Faces Increasing Pressure as a US Ally

Bahrain’s position places it close to the centre of the escalation. The country is a long-standing American security partner and hosts important US naval operations, but its small territory also means that civilian, military and commercial facilities may be located relatively close to one another.

Bahrain’s military said its air defences intercepted Iranian projectiles during the latest attacks. The statement suggests that at least some incoming weapons were destroyed, but it does not establish whether every projectile was intercepted or whether falling debris caused damage.

Iran has warned civilians in Gulf countries to avoid sites used by American forces. Such warnings increase uncertainty because buildings supporting US activities may not resemble military installations and may also contain civilian workers or commercial tenants.

The risk of miscalculation is substantial. An attack intended to damage an American-linked service could cause casualties among Bahraini residents, foreign workers or employees of unrelated companies.

The Claim Could Signal a Broader Technology War

The alleged Amazon strike suggests that Iran may be expanding its definition of legitimate American targets. Rather than focusing exclusively on airbases, naval installations and weapons depots, Tehran appears increasingly willing to identify commercial infrastructure as part of the US military system.

That development could place other large technology providers under greater pressure. Microsoft, Google and Oracle have expanded cloud and artificial-intelligence infrastructure across the Gulf, while regional governments are investing heavily in data centres and advanced computing.

A campaign against those facilities could damage the Gulf’s ambition to become a global technology and AI hub. It would also force international companies to reassess the physical security of expensive infrastructure located close to major military bases.

The immediate facts remain incomplete. The Guards say they targeted Amazon’s Bahrain data centre, but the claimed destruction has not been independently established. What is clearer is that cloud infrastructure has now become part of the conflict’s strategic landscape.

As military and civilian technologies become increasingly connected, an attack on a data centre can have consequences that extend far beyond the physical building. The reported operation is another warning that the Iran war is expanding across military, commercial and digital domains simultaneously.
