Google Maps is beginning to add a live speedometer to Android Auto, bringing a basic navigation feature to dashboard screens years after it became available on smartphones and competing in-car platforms.
The speedometer displays the vehicle’s estimated current speed beside the posted speed-limit icon. It can also change colour when the driver exceeds the detected limit, making it easier to recognize speeding without repeatedly checking the vehicle’s instrument cluster.
The feature has started appearing for a limited number of Google Maps beta users, including reports from Canada and India. Its rollout appears to be controlled from Google’s servers, so installing the latest app version does not guarantee immediate access.
Although the addition is useful, Google warns that the displayed figure is only a reference. Drivers should continue relying on their vehicle’s built-in speedometer because GPS estimates can become inaccurate in tunnels, between tall buildings or in areas with weak satellite reception.
What the New Android Auto Speedometer Shows
The new indicator appears as a floating circular icon near the lower corner of the Google Maps navigation display.
It sits beside the existing speed-limit sign, allowing drivers to compare their estimated current speed with the limit Google Maps associates with the road. Early examples show the speed reading changing colour when the vehicle moves above that limit.
The indicator may appear in a neutral colour while the vehicle remains within the limit, then turn yellow or red as the detected speed increases. Exact behaviour could vary by region, testing group or final implementation because the feature has not yet received a detailed public launch announcement from Google.
The design is similar to the speedometer already available when using Google Maps directly on an Android phone. That mobile version can be enabled through the application’s navigation settings in supported regions.
The difference is that drivers using Android Auto can now see the information directly on the car’s larger dashboard display rather than looking toward the connected phone.
Phones Have Offered the Feature Since 2019
The long delay is surprising because Google introduced speedometer and speed-limit tools to the mobile version of Maps in 2019.
Android users in supported countries have been able to view their estimated speed while navigating directly on a phone for years. The feature also reached Google Maps on Apple CarPlay in 2024, while drivers using Google’s own Android Auto platform continued to see only the road’s reported speed limit.
Waze, which Google owns, has included a live speedometer and customizable speeding alerts for considerably longer. Standalone satellite-navigation devices also commonly offered similar functionality decades ago.
That history made the omission increasingly difficult to explain. Android Auto already received route guidance, traffic reports, hazard notifications and posted speed limits from Google Maps, yet it did not display the GPS-derived speed that the same application could show on a phone.
The new rollout finally begins closing that feature gap.
Why the Feature May Have Taken So Long
Google has not publicly provided a specific explanation for withholding the speedometer from Android Auto.
One possible reason is that information shown on a dashboard must meet stricter safety and interface requirements than the same information shown on a handheld device. Android Auto is designed to reduce distraction through simplified controls, large visual elements and limited interaction while the vehicle is moving. Google’s official Android Auto guidance describes the platform as a way to access navigation, calls, messages and entertainment while remaining focused on driving.
A second issue involves accuracy and liability.
A car’s factory speedometer calculates speed using information from the vehicle’s wheel sensors and electronic systems. Google Maps generally estimates it through GPS location changes over time.
GPS can be highly accurate in open conditions, but its estimates may lag during sudden acceleration or braking. Tall buildings, mountains, tunnels and covered roads can interfere with satellite reception.
Google therefore does not want drivers to treat the Maps reading as an officially calibrated replacement for the vehicle’s instrument panel.
The delayed release may also reflect Google’s gradual development and testing process. Many Maps and Android Auto features are enabled through server-side switches rather than conventional app releases, allowing the company to test them with selected users before a wider deployment.
The Vehicle’s Speedometer Remains the Primary Reference
The new indicator should be treated as a secondary source of information.
A dashboard speedometer is integrated directly with the vehicle and must comply with applicable automotive regulations. The Google Maps figure depends on satellite positioning, map data and software interpretation.
The two readings may not always match. Factory speedometers can also show a slightly higher speed than the vehicle’s true movement, while a stable GPS reading may appear closer to the actual ground speed under ideal conditions.
The Maps indicator can still be useful when the factory display is difficult to see or when the driver wants a quick comparison between current speed and the local limit.
It may also help in vehicles where the main speed display is positioned outside the driver’s preferred line of sight. However, the driver should not assume that a Maps reading below the limit guarantees legal compliance.
Road signs and the vehicle’s own instruments remain the most reliable immediate references.
Speed-Limit Data Can Also Be Wrong
The speedometer’s usefulness depends partly on the accuracy of Google Maps’ posted limit.
Speed limits can change because of construction, school hours, weather, temporary regulations or recent road updates. Google’s database may not immediately reflect those changes.
A driver could therefore be travelling at the speed shown in the Maps limit icon while still violating a newly installed or temporary sign.
The colour warning should be viewed as a convenience rather than an enforcement-grade alert.
Drivers should always follow the physical signs beside the road. This is especially important in school zones and construction areas, where the permitted speed may apply only during particular hours or conditions.
Google Maps also allows users to report some incorrect road information, but updates may require verification before appearing for everyone.
The Rollout Is Still Limited
The speedometer is not yet available to every Android Auto user.
Initial reports involve the Google Maps beta version numbered 26.29.02.946673643, but other people using the same version have not received the indicator. That inconsistency strongly suggests a server-controlled rollout rather than a feature unlocked solely by updating the application.
Google frequently introduces Maps functions gradually. A small group may receive the update first while the company monitors reliability, visual layout and user feedback.
Availability can also differ by country. Local regulations, speed-limit data quality and language support may influence where the feature appears.
Users should keep Google Maps and Android Auto updated, but repeatedly reinstalling the applications is unlikely to activate a feature that has not yet been enabled for their account or region.
There is currently no official setting that forces the new Android Auto speedometer to appear.
Drivers May Be Able to Turn It Off
Google Maps on smartphones generally allows users to disable the speedometer through navigation settings.
It is not yet clear whether the Android Auto version will have its own separate control or follow the preference selected in the mobile application.
Some drivers may prefer to remove it because their vehicle already has a large digital speed display. Showing the same number twice could add unnecessary clutter to a relatively small infotainment screen.
Others may find the Maps display helpful because it places the current speed and road limit next to the navigation route.
The best design would allow the driver to choose whether the indicator remains visible while keeping the speed-limit sign available independently.
More detailed controls may appear when Google announces or completes the wider release.
It Arrives During a Major Android Auto Upgrade
The speedometer is only one of several improvements reaching Google’s in-car platform in 2026.
Google has begun introducing Immersive Navigation to Android Auto, adding more detailed three-dimensional buildings, road layouts, flyovers and surrounding landmarks. The interface is intended to make complicated junctions and exits easier to interpret.
Google also announced custom dashboard widgets, expanded Gemini integration and support for watching compatible video applications while the vehicle is safely parked. Its official Android in-car update describes a broader effort to improve navigation, communication and entertainment across Android Auto and vehicles with Google built in.
The company is also testing or developing interface changes for media playback, including more controls directly on the dashboard card. These updates could reduce the number of menus drivers need to open while using music or podcast applications.
Compared with immersive 3D maps and AI assistance, a speedometer may seem minor. In everyday driving, however, it may prove to be one of the most frequently viewed additions.
Android Auto and CarPlay Are Moving Closer Together
The update also reduces a visible difference between Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Google Maps brought its speedometer to CarPlay before offering it through Google’s own projection platform. That unusual order frustrated some Android users who expected Google services to receive their most complete experience on Google-controlled software.
CarPlay and Android Auto still have different layouts and integration methods, but their major navigation functions are becoming increasingly similar.
Both can provide turn-by-turn directions, estimated arrival times, traffic conditions, incident reports, speed limits and now a live GPS-based speed estimate through Google Maps.
The competition between the platforms increasingly concerns interface quality, voice assistants, application support and how deeply each system integrates with the vehicle.
A Small Feature With Everyday Value
A live speedometer is not a revolutionary navigation tool.
Every road-legal vehicle already includes a speed display, and the Google Maps figure should never replace it. The new indicator will not prevent speeding or correct inaccurate map data automatically.
Its value comes from convenience.
Drivers can view navigation instructions, the posted limit and their estimated current speed in one place. The colour-changing warning may also provide an immediate reminder when the vehicle begins moving too quickly.
The surprising part is not that Android Auto is receiving the function. It is that such a common feature remained absent for so long while Google Maps phones, CarPlay, Waze and older navigation devices already provided it.
The rollout is currently limited and may take time to reach all users. Once widely available, it should make the Android Auto version of Google Maps feel more complete even though drivers must still keep their eyes on the road and trust the speedometer built into the car.
