More than 122,000 adult portable bed rails have been recalled after two older men became trapped and died in separate incidents.
The recall covers three Vive Health models sold through medical-supply stores, Amazon, Vive Health’s website and other online retailers. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission said users can become trapped inside the rail or in the gap between the rail and the mattress, creating a risk of suffocation or asphyxiation.
Consumers should stop using the affected rails immediately and contact Vive Health for a full refund.
Two Men Died in September 2024
Vive Health reported two deaths associated with one of the recalled bed-rail models.
One victim was a 97-year-old man living in an assisted-living facility in Texas. The other was a 93-year-old man who died at his home in Florida. Both incidents occurred in September 2024.
The CPSC described both deaths as entrapment incidents.
A person can become wedged between the rail and the mattress, with pressure against the neck, chest or body preventing normal breathing. Someone with limited mobility, weakness or cognitive impairment may be unable to free themselves or call for assistance.
Which Vive Health Bed Rails Were Recalled?
The March 26, 2026 recall covers the Vive Health Compact Bed Rail, model LVA2009SLV, the Bed Rail Collection V, model LVA2097SLV, and units of model LVA1024 purchased on or before August 21, 2023.
Vive Health had already announced a separate recall in February 2026 covering certain LVA1024 units purchased after August 21, 2023, along with model LVA3031BLK. That earlier action involved approximately 12,355 rails and had no reported incidents at the time.
The recalled products are made from silver or white metal tubing and include black foam-rubber handles. Some units may not display a visible model number or brand-specific label, so owners may need to review their receipt or online purchase history.
Where and When Were They Sold?
The 122,000 recalled rails were sold from September 2019 through December 2025.
Prices ranged from approximately $45 to $90. They were available at medical-supply stores nationwide and online through Amazon, Vive Health and other medical-equipment retailers.
Because the products were sold for more than six years, they may now be in private homes, assisted-living facilities, nursing environments, guest rooms or storage.
Family members should check equipment being used by older relatives even when they did not personally purchase it.
How a Bed Rail Can Become a Suffocation Hazard
Adult portable bed rails are normally placed beneath or beside a mattress.
They may help a person reposition themselves, stand up, avoid rolling out of bed or feel more secure while sleeping. However, the device can create a dangerous opening when it shifts away from the mattress or is not compatible with the bed.
A person may slide partly through the gap and become trapped by the head, neck or chest.
The rail can then press the body against the mattress while the user’s own weight makes escape difficult. The incident may happen quietly, especially during sleep.
CPSC data indicate that approximately 90 percent of injuries associated with adult portable bed rails involve entrapment of the head, chest or neck.
Bed Rails Can Create a False Sense of Security
Families often install bed rails to prevent falls.
That purpose can make the device feel protective even when it is improperly fitted or unsafe for the user.
A rail may remain stable during ordinary handling but shift when someone rolls against it, attempts to stand or becomes disoriented during the night.
Soft mattresses can compress and create a larger gap. Adjustable beds may also change the relationship between the rail and mattress as the sleeping surface moves.
The risk may be greatest for people who cannot reposition themselves easily, including those with dementia, neurological conditions, physical weakness or medication-related confusion.
More Than Three Million Adult Bed Rails Have Been Recalled
The Vive Health campaign is part of a broader safety problem involving adult portable bed rails.
Since 2021, the CPSC has recalled or issued warnings covering more than three million adult bed rails. The agency says injuries and at least 18 deaths have been associated with those products.
The deaths have involved several brands and designs, not only Vive Health products.
Regulators introduced mandatory federal safety requirements in 2023 to reduce entrapment and other hazards. Adult portable bed rails manufactured after the rule’s effective date must meet performance, testing and labeling requirements.
Recalls continue because older products remain in use and some newer imported rails have failed to comply with the standard.
What Owners Should Do Immediately
Anyone who owns one of the recalled Vive Health models should remove it from service.
The CPSC says consumers should contact Vive Health for a full refund. Owners must write “RECALLED” on the upper and lower portions of the rail with permanent marker, place a paper showing the buyer’s name beside it and photograph the marked product. The image should then be emailed to the company.
After completing the refund documentation, the rail should be discarded according to local waste-disposal rules.
The recalled product should not be sold, donated or passed to another family.
Do Not Continue Using It With Extra Pillows or Straps
Adding pillows, blankets, foam or improvised ties is not an approved repair.
Soft materials can compress, move during sleep or create additional suffocation hazards. An extra strap may also fail to eliminate dangerous openings.
The recall provides a refund rather than a consumer repair kit, which means owners should not attempt to modify the rail and return it to service.
Removing the rail may require another fall-prevention plan. Families should discuss safer alternatives with a healthcare professional, occupational therapist or care provider rather than leaving a high-risk person without appropriate support.
Check the Gap Between Every Rail and Mattress
A bed rail that is not under recall can still become hazardous when installed incorrectly.
The CPSC advises owners to press the rail firmly against the mattress and secure the retention device properly. There should be no opening in which the user’s head, neck or chest could become trapped.
The agency also recommends leaving at least 12.5 inches between the rail and the headboard or footboard, keeping nearby furniture away and avoiding the installation of several rails directly beside one another.
The rail should be compatible with the exact mattress and bed frame. Owners should follow all installation instructions and inspect the equipment regularly for movement, loose straps or changes in mattress position.
Some Adults May Not Be Suitable Candidates for Bed Rails
A bed rail may not be appropriate for everyone.
Someone with dementia or confusion may attempt to climb over it, increasing the height and severity of a possible fall.
A person who moves unpredictably during sleep may become trapped despite apparently correct installation.
Care providers should consider the individual’s strength, mobility, awareness, body size and ability to call for help. The CPSC specifically advises close monitoring of people who may be at increased risk of entrapment, including those with cognitive impairment.
Alternative measures may include lowering the bed, placing protective mats beside it, improving lighting, changing medications that increase nighttime confusion or using supervised mobility assistance.
Families Should Check Online Order Histories
Some recalled Vive Health rails may not display clear model or brand markings.
Consumers who bought a bed-assist rail online should search their Amazon or medical-supply order history for Vive Health, Compact Bed Rail, Collection V or the affected model numbers.
Receipts can also establish whether an LVA1024 unit was purchased before or after August 21, 2023, which determines which Vive Health recall applies.
Owners can compare product photographs with those in the official CPSC recall announcement.
Care Facilities Should Inspect Every Room
Assisted-living facilities, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and home-care providers may have purchased bed rails in larger quantities.
A facility should not rely solely on mailed recall notices. Staff should create an inventory, inspect every room and record each model and purchase date.
Equipment moved between rooms can lose its original documentation, making physical inspection and purchasing records especially important.
Care facilities should also review whether remaining non-recalled bed rails are correctly installed and appropriate for each resident.
The fact that one of the two reported deaths occurred in an assisted-living facility shows that professional supervision does not eliminate the hazard.
What to Do After an Entrapment Incident
A person who becomes trapped may require urgent medical attention even after being freed.
Pressure against the chest or neck can interfere with breathing and circulation. The person may also suffer bruising, fractures, oxygen deprivation or delayed complications.
Emergency services should be contacted when the person is unresponsive, has difficulty breathing, shows confusion or has suffered a significant fall.
The incident should also be reported to the manufacturer and through SaferProducts.gov, the CPSC’s consumer-product incident database.
