Apple Maps can show far more than roads and directions.
When traffic information is enabled, stretches of road may suddenly appear yellow or red. To someone who rarely uses the traffic layer, that red line can look like a warning that a road is closed, blocked by an accident, or even unavailable entirely.
Usually, it means something simpler.
According to Apple, a red line on Apple Maps indicates stop-and-go traffic, while yellow indicates slower-moving traffic.
So if a route suddenly turns red, Apple Maps is warning that vehicles on that section of road are moving substantially slower than normal.
That does not automatically mean the road is closed.
It means congestion is serious enough that Apple expects travel through that section to be difficult.

If many devices appear to be moving extremely slowly along a section of highway that normally flows much faster, Maps can infer that there is congestion.
It does not necessarily need someone to manually report:

The Red Line Can Affect the Route Apple Chooses
Traffic colors are not merely decorative.
Apple Maps can use current traffic information when estimating how long a journey will take and deciding which route should be recommended.
That means a geographically shorter route may not be the fastest one.

If someone never sees traffic colors in Apple Maps, the selected map view may be the reason.

Driving view naturally places much greater emphasis on roads and traffic.

That means someone casually browsing in another map mode may not see the same traffic information as a person actively planning a driving route.

Users sometimes notice roads that appear darker red than ordinary traffic markings and assume Apple has an additional official category for completely stationary traffic.

That means it is safer not to treat every slightly different shade as a completely separate official traffic category.
Display appearance can vary depending on map style, route highlighting, screen settings and the surrounding graphics.
If there is uncertainty about whether the road is actually closed, checking for a closure or incident marker is more useful than judging only the darkness of the red color.
Red Traffic Can Also Change Your Arrival Time
The estimated arrival time shown by Apple Maps already attempts to account for traffic conditions.
So if a section turns red during a journey, the ETA may increase.
Apple Maps can also recommend an alternative route if conditions change enough to make another road faster.
That is one of the major advantages of keeping navigation running even on a familiar commute.
Someone may know exactly how to get home.
What he does not necessarily know is that an accident happened ten minutes earlier on the highway.
Maps can.
A red line appearing on the usual route may therefore be the first indication that today’s familiar drive is no longer the fastest choice.
Should You Always Avoid a Red Road?
Not necessarily.
A red road indicates bad traffic, but the alternatives can still be worse.
Suppose the highway has ten minutes of stop-and-go traffic.
The alternative requires a 25-minute detour through local roads.
Apple Maps may correctly keep the driver on the red highway because, despite congestion, it remains the fastest route.
This is why the presence of a red line should not automatically trigger an immediate exit.
Compare the suggested arrival times.
If Apple offers an alternative that saves meaningful time, changing routes may make sense.
If it does not, staying in traffic may unfortunately be the least bad option.
Navigation software is trying to optimize the complete journey rather than eliminate every moment of congestion.
The Color Is a Warning, Not an Emergency
The easiest way to remember Apple Maps’ traffic colors is to think about severity.
Yellow means traffic is slowing.
Red means it has deteriorated into stop-and-go conditions.
A red line does not by itself mean there has been an accident.
It does not automatically mean police have closed the road.
And it does not mean Apple Maps has made an error.
It means the service expects that section to move significantly slower than normal.
