OpenAI is preparing to give thousands of scientists, mathematicians and engineers free access to its most advanced artificial intelligence models through a major academic research initiative.
The company has introduced ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, a program designed to provide frontier AI tools to 100,000 researchers at selected academic institutions. The initiative will begin with approximately 10,000 researchers during summer 2026 before expanding to its full target through 2027.
Participants will receive access to advanced models and research tools without paying the standard subscription costs. OpenAI says the program is intended to help researchers investigate difficult problems, test hypotheses, analyse information and accelerate scientific discovery.

What OpenAI Is Offering Researchers
Approved participants will receive free access to OpenAI’s frontier models across ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex. The program will initially include the GPT-5.6 family, including GPT-5.6 Sol Pro for demanding scientific and mathematical tasks.
Researchers will also receive expanded deep-research capabilities, larger context windows and higher usage limits. These features could support projects requiring the analysis of long papers, complex datasets, extensive source material or multiple stages of reasoning.
The tools will not be limited to answering research questions. Codex can assist with writing and debugging code, analysing datasets and creating reproducible computational workflows. ChatGPT Work can support longer projects involving literature reviews, grant applications, manuscript preparation and the communication of research findings.
OpenAI says participating researchers will also be able to use more than 75 life-science skills covering areas such as genomics, genetics, protein modelling, sequencing and drug discovery. Connectors can provide access to scientific literature, public databases, satellite imagery, notebooks, data platforms and reference-management systems. The Program Will Start With 10,000 Researchers
Although OpenAI plans to support 100,000 researchers, access will be introduced gradually. The first phase will include about 10,000 participants during summer 2026.
Access is already being provided at institutions including the Institute for Advanced Study and École normale supérieure. OpenAI plans to add more eligible universities and expand the total number of participating researchers through the end of 2027.
The initial program is not automatically available to every person working on an academic project. Applicants must be affiliated with an eligible institution and actively involved in scientific research. The institution must be a recognized degree-granting college or university with a high level of research activity.
Applicants will be required to verify their institutional affiliation and provide details about their research activities and intended use of the models. An approved participant may invite up to four collaborators from the same institution, although each collaborator must complete verification and will count toward the program’s account total.
Researchers who meet the requirements can review the criteria through the official application information provided by OpenAI.
Training and Technical Support Are Included
Providing advanced models does not guarantee that every researcher will immediately understand how to use them effectively. Scientific disciplines have different workflows, standards and levels of experience with generative AI.
To address this, OpenAI will provide training for both new and experienced users. Introductory support will focus on getting started and improving research workflows, while advanced guidance will explore more specialized scientific applications.
Participants will also have access to specialists familiar with research processes. This support could help teams integrate AI into literature analysis, experimental planning, coding, data evaluation and academic writing without forcing them to redesign their entire workflow.
OpenAI also plans to create opportunities for researchers to share practical methods and learn from other participants. Feedback from the academic community will be used to identify where the models are useful, where they remain unreliable and how future versions could better support scientific work.
Privacy Protections Will Matter for Academic Adoption
Research projects may involve unpublished findings, confidential manuscripts, sensitive datasets or commercially valuable discoveries. For that reason, data handling will be one of the most important considerations for institutions evaluating the program.
OpenAI says the research workspaces will include business-grade security and privacy protections. Data submitted through these workspaces will not be used to train OpenAI’s models by default.
Institutions that already use ChatGPT Edu will have program access coordinated through their existing institutional workspace. This may make it easier for universities to manage accounts, security policies and researcher access through one centralized environment.
These protections do not remove the need for institutional review. Universities and research teams will still need to consider their own data-governance rules, ethics requirements and restrictions surrounding confidential or personally identifiable information before uploading material to any AI system.
OpenAI Says AI Use in Science Is Already Growing
The new program is being introduced as researchers increasingly use AI during different stages of scientific work.
OpenAI reports that approximately 1.3 million people use ChatGPT for advanced science and mathematics each week, generating about 8.4 million related messages. Researchers are using ChatGPT to explore ideas, understand technical knowledge, generate hypotheses and communicate results, while Codex is being used for coding, analysis and formal research execution.
The company also found that intensive AI users were more likely to assign the technology longer and more ambitious tasks. Researchers in the top 20 percent of AI usage within their fields were almost twice as likely as their peers to request work estimated to require four hours or more.
These figures come from OpenAI’s own platform analysis and should therefore be viewed as company-reported usage data rather than an independent measurement of scientific productivity. However, they show why OpenAI is investing in structured academic access rather than treating research use as a secondary application of ChatGPT.
The Initiative Is Part of a Larger Scientific Investment
ChatGPT for Academic Researchers is part of an OpenAI commitment of more than $250 million through 2027 to support external scientific research and discovery.
That commitment includes NextGenAI, a $50 million initiative supporting research institutions, as well as OpenAI’s involvement with the United States Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission. The company is also providing access and technical resources to researchers at national laboratories and universities.
Through the Genesis Mission, OpenAI has committed $4 million in Codex access for approximately 2,000 participating researchers. It has also committed $3 million in API support for scientific campaigns addressing complex research challenges.
The company’s national science initiative includes work involving advanced computing, scientific simulations, biological research, cybersecurity and materials science.
OpenAI has also introduced Prism, a free AI-native workspace for scientific writing and collaboration. Prism combines LaTeX-based document creation with integrated AI assistance for equations, citations, literature discovery and manuscript revision.
The New Program Is Different From API Research Credits
OpenAI already operates a separate Researcher Access Program that provides selected researchers with up to $1,000 in API credits.
That older program focuses heavily on work involving responsible AI deployment, alignment, fairness, societal impact, misuse, human-AI interaction and model evaluation. Credits remain valid for 12 months and can be used with publicly available OpenAI API models.
The OpenAI Researcher Access Program remains available, particularly for early-career researchers and applicants with limited institutional resources. Applications are reviewed quarterly.
ChatGPT for Academic Researchers is broader and considerably larger. Instead of providing a limited amount of API credit for one project, it offers institutional access to ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work and Codex, along with higher limits, collaboration features and structured support.
Free Access Could Reduce the AI Gap Between Institutions
Advanced AI tools can be expensive when used regularly across large research teams. Universities with substantial funding may be able to purchase institutional access, while smaller departments and early-career researchers may face greater limitations.
Providing free frontier-model access could reduce some of that gap, particularly when researchers need high usage limits or long context windows for complex projects. It could also allow institutions to evaluate advanced AI tools before committing to wider commercial deployment.
However, the program remains selective. Access depends on institutional eligibility, verification and approval, meaning many independent researchers, smaller colleges and researchers outside participating institutions may not qualify during the first phase.
The initiative’s long-term impact will depend on how broadly OpenAI expands the eligible institution list and whether access remains available after the current commitment ends in 2027.
AI Will Assist Researchers, Not Replace Scientific Validation
The program could speed up literature reviews, coding, data analysis, hypothesis development and research communication. It does not remove the need for human verification.
AI models can produce incorrect calculations, invent references, misunderstand experimental conditions or present uncertain conclusions confidently. Researchers must continue to evaluate outputs, document their methods and validate findings through established scientific processes.
OpenAI states that its strategy is not to determine which scientific problems deserve attention. Instead, the company intends to give researchers tools that allow them to pursue questions within their own fields while remaining responsible for methods and conclusions.
By giving as many as 100,000 researchers access to its most capable models, OpenAI is making a significant attempt to position artificial intelligence as part of everyday scientific infrastructure. The program could broaden access to advanced computational assistance, but its success will ultimately be measured by whether researchers can use those tools to produce reliable, reproducible and meaningful discoveries.
